DENNIS A. DUTY

LEBANON – Dennis Allen Duty age 57 passed away November 16, 2017 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born November 30, 1959, he was the son of the late William Marvin and Monnie Wampler Duty.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one baby, Lowell William Duty.

He is survived by two sisters: Norma Stallard of Pound, VA and Gelaine Meade of Cleveland, VA; one brother: Danny Mark Duty of Cleveland, VA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Dennis Allen Duty will be conducted Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow in the Duty Family Cemetery in Bee, VA. The family will receive friends after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Duty, Tyler Meade, Danny William Robinson, Caleb Crabtree, Danny Lester and Ken Reynolds. Honarary pallbearers will be the Employees of Mercy Ambulance Service. Wanda L. Phillips

LEBANON, VA- Wanda Louise Cook Phillips, age 60, passed away November 12, 2017. Wanda was born June 1, 1957 in Richlands, VA. She was the wife of the late Robert (Bob) Phillips, Sr. and daughter of the late Carrol D. Cook and Dixie Lynthlin Cook-Hamilton. Wanda was retired from Russell County Sheriff’s Office. She was also a homemaker and a member of Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step-father: Tommy Hamilton; one son-in-law: Michael Cross; and infant grandson: Christian Shane Phillips.

Survivors include one son: Robert Carrol Phillips, Jr. and wife Misty of Lebanon, VA; one daughter: Brooke Cross Barton and husband Kenneth of Lebanon, VA; one brother: Louis Carrol Cook and wife Lisa of Lebanon, VA; one sister: Lois Adkins and husband Larry of Meadowview, VA. The joys of her life, her grandchildren: JulieAnna Cross, Levi Barton, and Nathan Phillips; and special niece Abigail Cook also survive.

According to her wishes there will be no services. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2017 in the chapel of Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon. JOE WORLEY (JOEY) STINSON, JR.

Lebanon – Joe Worley (Joey) Stinson, Jr. age 63 passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at his home.

Joey was born February 27, 1954, a son of the late Joe Worley Stinson and Anna Kathryne Kiser Stinson. Joey was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 0147.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one nephew, Trevor Blankenship.

He is survived by daughter: Melissa (Missy) Stinson of Wilmington, NC; Son: Daniel Simpkins of Hiwassee, VA; Sisters: Teresa Dotson and Husband Randy of Castlewood, VA; Sandy Blankenship and late husband Jerry of Lebanon, VA; Brother: Manly Stinson of Lebanon, VA; Nephews; Tanner, Casey and Owen Dotson all of Castlewood, VA; Justin and wife Bekah, David, Matthew, Jere and Obi Blankenship and Wyatt Stinson all of Lebanon, VA; Niece: Lindsey Stinson of Lebanon, VA; a very special Sister-In-Law: Connie Stinson of Lebanon, VA; Uncle: Jim Kiser of Tavares, FL.

Funeral services for Joey Stinson will be Friday, November 3, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Musick officiating. Burial will be Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Russell Memorial Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 prior to service.

WANDA W. CASTLE

Lebanon, VA – Wanda Weaver Castle, age 85, passed away on October 30. 2017 in Russell County Medical Center.

She was the wife of the late Nathan F. (June) Castle, Jr., and the daughter of the late Grover Weaver and Violet Baldwin Weaver of White Top (Piney), VA. She was also preceded in death by a brother Richard Weaver, who died as a child.

Wanda is survived by her son David Nathan Castle and wife Judy and her beloved grandsons; Nathan Castle, Matthew Castle, and Jacob Castle; her daughter: Jane Elizabeth Castle, wife of the late Ronnie H. Fields; her sister: Edith Pauline (Polly) Roberts; brother: Kenneth Weaver and wife Jean: and her brother-in-law: Leon Castle and wife Nancy. Her nieces and nephews were all special to her, as were their children.

Wanda graduated from Lansing High School in Lansing, NC and she was 1952 graduate of Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Abingdon, Va. She moved to Lebanon, VA also in 1952, when she and Nathan married.

In her nursing career, she worked as Public Health Nurse in Russell County and in various positions at Lebanon General Hospital, later serving as Director of Nursing at Russell County Medical Center in the 1970s and 1980s until she retired. Prior to this position, she as a teacher of many preparing to be nursing assistants at the Russell County Vocational School.

Wanda was always an advocate for the health and education of children. She was active in the Head Start Program for children in the 1960s and she served in various positions, including President of the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) at the local, regional and state levels In Virginia. She has been a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church all of her adult life where she taught Sunday School over many years.

For more than a decade, she was a board member of the Palace Homeowners Association, Myrtle Beach, SC, serving as President from 1991-1998.

In 1992, Nathan and Wanda became co-owners of Secor, Inc. which continues to operate in Lebanon, VA. Wanda continued to serve as President, remaining actively engaged within this agency until her death.

The funeral will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Combs Funeral Service Chapel. Burial to follow in the Russell Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2017.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Nathan Castle, Matthew Castle, Jacob Castle, her nephew: Jim Roberts, Rob Capelli, Steve Shortt and Morris Taylor.

The family would like to especially thank their Mother’s caregivers: Peggy Jordan, Tina Sullivan, Hilary Robinson, Iva Nell Salyer, Amanda Allen and all who have cared for her over the years, including Dr. Dwight Bailey and Home Nursing Company. A special note of appreciation is also needed for Dr. Michael Ulrich, the nurses, and the staff of Russell County Medical Center. Thank you for walking with us during our Mother’s passing. We could not be more grateful for the care she received.

JOYCE ABSHIRE

LEBANON, VA – Joyce Abshire age 60, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at her home. Joyce was born May 16, 1957 in Richlands, a daughter of the late Carl Henry and Betty Robinson Ray. She was a member of Cliffield Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Ray.

Survivors include her husband of forty years, Artie Abshire; One Daughter: Mindy King and Husband Ronnie; Two Sisters: Jane Ray and Connie Musick; Two Grandchildren: Jordan Robinson and R.J. King; Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

A memorial service for Joyce Abshire will be conducted 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 30, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Richard Smith and Jeff Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service.

James Henry Taylor

CLEVELAND, VA- James Henry Taylor, age 83, of the Spring City community went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 21, 2017 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. James was a lifelong resident of Russell County. He was a son of the late Roby Taylor and the late Alice Cumbow Taylor. James was of the Christian faith and retired from the former Russell Manufacturing Co. in Lebanon.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter: Sherry Taylor Combs; two brothers: Tilson and Millard Taylor; two sisters: Dorothy Johnson and an infant sister. James Henry was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Lucille Robinson Taylor; one son: David M. Taylor; son-in-law: Larry Combs; three grandchildren: Derrick Combs, Logan Chafin, and Dalton Taylor; two great-grandchildren: Wyatt and Kaidyn Chafin; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Lyons Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2017 at the funeral home.

LEBANON, VA- Ricky Sutherland, age 66, went to be with the Lord Friday, October 20, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his father: William Bill Sutherland.

Survivors include his mother: Hazel Duncan Sutherland; three sisters: Nancy Rhea of Cleveland, VA, Dorothy Johnson of Quinton, VA, Janet Mitchell and husband Mark of Lebanon, VA; one half-brother: Billy Sutherland of Cleveland, VA; three brothers: Jessie Sutherland of Lebanon, VA, Mick Sutherland and wife Pat of Richmond, VA, and Carlos Sutherland and wife Kathy of Cleveland, VA.

NORTH TAZEWELL- Danny Dorton, age 64, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 at his home after a lengthy illness.

Danny was preceded in death by his parents: William Dorton II and Flora Cantrell Dorton.

Survivors include his wife: Alberta Dorton; one daughter: Alicia Tester and husband Steve; one son: Danny Dorton II and wife Tonya; three step sons: Robbie Sawyers, Johnathan Sawyers, and Steven Sawyers; one brother: William Dorton; five grandchildren: Eden Tester, Brent Dorton, Casey Dorton, Lakin Croy, and J.J. Sawyers; Several nieces and nephews survive.

James (Magoo) Lyons

Lebanon, VA – James (Magoo) Lyons, age 78, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 at his home. Born February 26, 1939, a son of the late Paul and Cleo Stump Lyons. He was a US Army veteran. He is a retired employee of the Town of Lebanon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother: Gerald Lyons; and one sister: Elizabeth Davis.

He is survived by three sisters: Patricia Fields and husband Jackie; Wanda Belcher and husband James; Phyllis Robinson and husband Bobby; two nieces: Tammy Musick, Bobbie Jean Lowman and husband Rodney; two nephews: David Fields and wife Trish and Sammy Davis and wife Debbie; and one great-niece: Megan Lowman.

Honoring Jim’s request there will be no visitation nor funeral service.

David Junior Johnson

LEBANON, VA- David Junior Johnson, age 50, passed away peacefully at his home October 19, 2017. David was born to Donald and Betty Johnson, July 2, 1967 in Manassas, VA.

He was preceded in death by his father: Donald Johnson.

Survivors include his fiancé: Kathy Courtney; one daughter: Vanessa Shepard and husband Jonathan Redmond; his mother: Betty Johnson; five sisters: Jennifer Parks, Alisia Alano; Sandy Belcher; Donna Cook and husband Tony; and Melissa Lopez and husband Juan; one grandson: Patrick Lee; one granddaughter: Isabella Faith Redmond; and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Don Lasley

LEBANON, VA- Donald Lasley, age 84, born October 10, 1933 went to be with the Lord on October 19, 2017. Don was the son of the late James Will and Bessie Bussey Lasley. He graduated in 1952 from Lebanon High School, spent a year at Bluefield College, and then joined the United States Army in September, 1954 until August, 1956, where he was stationed in Germany as an occupational soldier receiving credit for WWII. After serving in the military, Don became Captain of the Russell County Rescue Squad, and was the first EMT Instructor in the State of Virginia. Many of Don’s students went on to be Paramedics, Nurses, and other medical personnel. Don worked as a guard when the Clinch River Plant in Carbo, VA, was being built in 1956. Upon its completion, he transitioned to a Maintenance Mechanic A within the plant, where he spent 37 years before retirement. He was also a member of Veterans Foreign Wars. Don was the last surviving sibling of 9 children.

Don is survived by his wife of 60 years: Madenia (Billie) Edwards Lasley; four children: Donald Lee and wife Tammy, Deborah Farmer, Tammy Robinson and husband Jerry, and Jacquelyn Stiltner and husband Keith. He is also survived by: twenty one grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Stella Lasley, and Mary Jo Lasley, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted 2pm Sunday, October 22, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Garrett officiating. Don will be laid to rest in West Hill Cemetery in Lebanon, VA following the service. The family will receive friends from 5 pm until 8 pm Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the funeral home.

Robert Howard Munsey, II

LEBANON, VA – Robert (Bob) Howard Munsey, II, age 68, passed away at his home Sunday, October 15, 2017. Bob was born June 17, 1949. A son of the late Robert Howard Munsey and Mary Jane McDavid Munsey. He was retired from Food City in Lebanon, VA. He was of the Christian Faith. He was an avid Dodgers fan and was an animal lover

He is survived by one daughter: Madison Munsey of Nelson County, VA; one son: Timothy Munsey of Nelson County, VA; two sisters: Laura Messamore and husband Mike of Kingsport, TN and Sherry France and husband Forrest of Texas.; One brother: Timothy J. Munsey and wife Marsha of Parkersburg, WVA; One granddaughter: Penny Lane Munsey. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Robert Howard Munsey, II will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday October 19, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Fletcher officiating.  Mary Jessee Ferguson

ABINGDON- Mary Jessee Ferguson, age 90, slipped into eternity in her sleep Friday, October 13, 2017. Mary was a daughter of the late Grady Jessee, Sr. and Bessie Stamper Jessee. She was a retired employee of Russell Manufacturing Company and a member of Nash’s Ford Baptist Church. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, mother-in-law, and aunt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Bill Kiser; second husband: Kyle Ferguson; one son: Roger Kiser; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one daughter: Billie Sue Garrett and husband Joe of Bristol, TN; one son: Gary (Mitt) Kiser and wife Linda of Abingdon; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

A special thanks to her caregiver: Hope Kesner; and to Amedisys Home Health.

Rose Porter

Lebanon, VA – Rose Porter, age 89, of Lebanon, Virginia passed away peacefully, entering into eternal life and peace with her Savior Jesus Christ. Rose was born In Manchester, England on December 7, 1927 to her parents William Ian Saunders and Alice McDonald Saunders. Rose grew up in England and often recounted stories of living through the bombings of WWII.

Rose practiced the Catholic faith and attended St. Therese’s Catholic Church in St. Paul, Virginia for several years in the 1970s. She was instrumental in sharing the love of Jesus through her work helping the poor and needy in the St. Paul and Castlewood, Virginia area. Rose was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Lebanon, Virginia at the time of her passing.

Rose was proceeded in death by her parents William and Alice Saunders, her sister Irene Hannaford, and the father of her children Charles H. Porter, Jr.

Rose is survived by her children Alisa Ervin and husband James Ervin, Jr. of Damron, Maryland, Andrew Porter and wife Debbie Porter of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Allen Porter and wife Rhonda Porter of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Aaron Porter and wife Endia Porter of Sacramento, California: 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Rose is also survived by her companion and helpmate of over 30 years, James White of Lebanon, Virginia.

Combs Funeral Service of Lebanon, Virginia will be in charge of the cremation. Family will receive friends from 2:30 pm until 4:00 pm at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Lebanon, Virginia on Sunday October 15, 2017. A Celebration of Life and Catholic Service will follow at 4:00 pm.

Charles William Mays

LIZELLA, GA – Charles William Mays, age 72, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 5, 2017. Charlie was a US Marine Veteran serving in the Vietnam War and was A Purple Heart Recipient. He adored his country and fought for it. God Bless America was his emblem. Charlie and his wife Peggy owned and operated C&P Distributing Inc. and C&P General Contractors Inc.

Survivors include: his beloved wife: Peggy Jean Mays; sons: Michael Mays and his wife Wendy; and Matthew Mays; and five grandchildren: Alex, Austin, Andrew, Cody, and Bailey Mays.

Special honors to his late aunt Ollie R. Jessee of Castlewood, VA. She lives in his heart forever.

The funeral service will be conducted 7 pm Thursday, October 12, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Dr. Phil Kidd officiating. The burial will be 11am Friday, October 13, 2017 in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am to go in procession to the cemetery. Wayne McFadden

Lebanon, VA – WAYNE DOUGLAS MCFADDEN, age 79, passed away Wednesday morning, September 27, 2017 in Lebanon, Va. Wayne was born October 26, 1937 in Hansonville, VA. He was the son of the late Ballard Winfield McFadden and Lucy Horne McFadden of Lebanon, VA. Wayne was the “Pepsi Man” for several decades in Lebanon and Russell County.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Elnor Mae Hoops McFadden; his brother; John Luther (J.L.) McFadden; his sisters; Phyllis Holmes and Lois Dixon.

Survivors include four sons; Anthony McFadden and wife Barbara and Jason McFadden of Lebanon, VA; Gary McFadden of Fredericksburg, VA; Mark McFadden and wife Glenna of Abingdon, VA; one daughter; Kathy McFadden and friend Gaines Kiser of Lebanon, VA; and Jenessa Cooke of Los Angeles, CA is like another daughter. His grandchildren are Eric Puckett, Heather Puckett, Travis McFadden, Samuel McFadden; His great grandchildren Tyler Puckett, Mollie Puckett, Dominic Buckner and Makayla Arrington. He is survived by two sisters: Sandra Jessee and husband Ken, and Janice Campbell and husband Ralph; and a sister-in-law: Leoda McFadden; and one brother-in-law: C.E. (Buster) Hoops.

Funeral services for Wayne McFadden will be Friday, September 29, 2017 at 8:00 p.m.in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Williams officiating. Entombment will be Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the Funeral Home at 12:15 to go in procession to the mausoleum. Family will received friends 6:00 until 8:00 prior to funeral service.

Pallbearers will be: Travis McFadden, Eric Puckett, Tyler Puckett, Seth Kiser, Gaines Kiser and David Wilburn.
