Paul Garrett Hess, Sr

LEBANON, VA-Paul Garrett Hess, Sr., age 84, went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 23, 2015 in Commonwealth Assisted Living surrounded by his family.

Paul was born July 29, 1931 in Russell County, a son of the late Thomas and Sally Hess and the husband of the late Virginia Bise Hess. He was a retired employee of The Town of Lebanon and attended the Church of Jesus Christ in Lebanon.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one granddaughter: Angela Dawn Hess; three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one son: Paul Hess, Jr. and wife Verna, Lebanon, VA; one granddaughter: Crystal Hess, Lebanon, VA; three sisters: Susie Deskins, Cleveland, VA, Frances White and husband Walter, Abingdon, VA; and Ida Eaton, Honaker, VA; special friends Ancil and Jean Murphy, Sammie Helton and Naomi Miller; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The family would like to give thanks to the PACE Program, especially to Ashley Musick and Rachel Gilmer and the Common Wealth Assisted Living.

The funeral service will be conducted 1 pm Thursday, August 27, 2015 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Seth Shortridge and the Rev. Randall Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. The family will receive friends after 5 pm Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at the funeral home with a song service beginning at 7 pm. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Robinette, Jimmie Lee Fields, Kiaser Williams, Wayne Musick, Will Stamper and Mike Duty. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Tony Dodi, H.C. CLEVELAND, VA- Linda G. Slate, age 70 went to be with the Lord Saturday, August 15, 2015 at her home.

Linda was born September 3, 1944, a daughter of the late Bert and Bea Nickles McInturff. She was retired from Pittston Coal Group and AT&T. Linda was a member of Copper Ridge Baptist Church where she volunteered for many duties.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years: Sam Slate; one daughter: Melinda Conner, St. Paul, VA; two sons: Kevin Slate and wife Amy Z. Slate, Roanoke, VA; and William Slate, Abingdon, VA; five grandchildren: Morgan Conner, Kelsey Slate, Owen Slate, Abigail Slate and Samuel Slate; three sisters: Frances Hughes and husband Graham; Faye Davis and husband Robert, all of Bristol; and Kay Glovier and husband Roger, Lebanon, VA; one brother, Kenneth McInturff, Castlewood, VA; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 pm Wednesday, August 19, 2015 in the Copper Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Duane Musick and L.F. Valley officiating. Burial will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, August 20, 2015 in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Danny M. Taylor

CLEVELAND, VA- Danny M. Taylor, age 74, of the Spring City Community passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015.

Danny was born September 11, 1940 in Belfast Community of Russell County, a son of the late Rev. Banner Taylor and the late Eula Robinson Taylor. Danny was a Graphics Arts Designer. He gave his heart to the Lord at a very early age on Easter morning. He attended New Day Worship in Castlewood.

Survivors include his wife of 15 years: Wanda Taylor, Spring City, VA; two daughters: Starr Monk and husband Tommy, Lebanon, VA; and Ginger Gimble and husband Jeff, Libby Montana; one son: Maynard Hall and wife Sabrina, Cleveland, VA; Step-daughters: Sherry Taylor, Cleveland, VA; and Shauna Taylor and husband Michael, Castlewood, VA; three grandchildren: Nick and Cameron Gimble and April Monk; step-grandchildren: Bridget Chaffin, Josh Harris, Destiny Taylor, Daiden Taylor, Jasmine Howard, Johnathan Howard, Caitlyn Taylor and Samantha Thomas; two step-great-grandchildren: Hunter Chaffin and Ella Chaffin; two sisters: Virginia Louise Hubbard, Spring City, VA; and Janice Hall and husband Larry, Bristol, TN; three brothers: George Taylor and wife Evelyn, Spring City, VA; William Taylor and wife Susan, Florida; and Jerry Taylor, Dickensonville; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

 Hilderd Fields Gunn

LEBANON, VA- Hilderd Fields Gunn, age 82 passed away Friday, August 14, 2015 at her home.

Hilderd was born July 3, 1933, a daughter of the late Conley and Gladiola Ferguson Fields. She was of the Christian faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Edgar Gunn; two brothers: Trigg Fields and Boyd Fields; brothers-in-laws: Robert VanDyke and Jimmy Jessee; and nephew: Tim Fields.

Survivors include her sisters: Letha Fields Vandyke and DeVee Fields Jessee; sister-in-law: Virginia Fields; two nieces: Sherry Jessee Dowdy and husband Charles Dowdy and Jan Hendrickson and husband Carl Hendrickson; one nephew: Greg Fields and wife Janet Fields; step-children: Ray Gunn, Rick Gunn, Mary Gunn and Sandra Gunn; Also several great-nieces and nephews survive.

Hilderd was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing, affiliated with University of Tennessee. Her nursing career and adventurous spirit took her from Richmond, VA to Los Angeles California. She retired as a Registered Nurse to care for many family members during their illnesses. Hilderd had a love for animals ‘’especially cats’’, flowers and poetry. She was elected into the International Poetry Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and a volunteer for Russell County Medical Center Auxiliary.

The family would like to thank Home Nursing Company for their services, with special thanks to Megan Lester and Mary Dale Moore. We would also like to thank caregivers, Ginger Hopkins, Teresa Compton and Debbie Compton for their care and compassion.

The funeral service will be conducted 2 pm Sunday, August 16, 2015 in the Combs Funeral Service with Randy Williams officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon. The family will receive friends 1 pm until 2 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Don Haywood

LEBANON, VA- Don Haywood, age 69, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 10, 2015 in Bristol Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Don was born November 3, 1945 in Tazewell County, a son of the late James (Jim) Haywood and the late Lucy Price Haywood. He was a disabled coal miner.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by eight brothers: Garnet, Cecil, Charlie, June, John, Dewey, Henry and Ernest Haywood; two sisters: Mary Smith and Bessie Mae Haywood; and son-in-law: Jim Penley.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years: Mary Hughes Haywood; two daughters: Tammy Penley, Lebanon, VA; and Tina Duty and husband Stacy, Lebanon, VA; one son: Jimmy Haywood and wife Angie, Mooresburg, TN; five grandchildren: Dallas (Bub) Johnson and wife Katrina, Tabitha Baldwin, Dustin Johnson, Brooke Haywood and Kelsey Haywood; four great-grandchildren: Ethan Johnson, Hannah Ray, Hunter Johnson and Madison Baldwin; step-granddaughter: Cheyenne Dunmyer; two sisters: Virginia Williams and husband James, Abingdon, VA; and twin sister: Nell Burnette, Williamsburg, VA; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted 11 am Thursday, August 13, 2015 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Haywood Family Cemetery near the home. The family will receive friends after 6 pm Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at the funeral home. Charlie (Bunk) Groce

LEBANON, VA- Charlie (Bunk) Groce, age 76, went to be with the Lord Friday, August 7, 2015 in Holston Valley Medical Center.

Charlie was born December 30, 1938 in Lebanon, a son of the late Tom and Florence Robins Groce. He was the husband of the late Rosabelle Tiller Groce. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one sister: Ruth Babbs and two brothers: Dan and Benny Groce.

Survivors include two daughters: Sandra Dye and husband Jackie, Honaker, VA; and Charlene Gobble, Lebanon, VA; two granddaughters: Amanda Wise and husband Jason, Belfast, VA; and Kendra Gobble and husband Chris, Honaker, VA; four great-grandchildren: Jacklyn Whited, Samantha Whited, both of Belfast, VA; Megan Lowery and Parker Gobble, both of Honaker, VA; two sisters: Carolyn Stacy, Lebanon, VA; and Brenda Leslie and husband Claude, Lebanon, VA; one brother: Bill Groce, Lebanon, VA; special friend Patsy Ray, Lebanon, VA.

ABINGDON, VA- Fatina Ann Puckett, age 56, went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at her home.

Fatina was a member of the Lebanon Community Fellowship. She was a compassionate and giving spirit. Her love for all people will continue on through her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father: Carlton K. Puckett and brother: David Puckett.

Harold Albert West

BELFAST, VA- Harold Albert West, Age 90, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015.

Harold was a United States Army Veteran of WWII and retired from Pittston Coal Corporation. Harold was very active as a 32nd Mason with his home lodge Pruner in Honaker, VA. Harold was the last surviving child of the family of Robert Elliot West. Preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Robinson West.

Survivors include daughter: Nancy and husband Mark Munsey of Wytheville, VA; granddaughter: Catherine Munsey Granai and husband James Granai, of Johnson City, TN; and one great-granddaughter: Elizabeth Addyson Granai, of Johnson, City, TN.

The Funeral Service will be conducted at 2 pm Friday, July 24, 2015 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Kinder officiating. CASTLEWOOD, VA- Billy Thomas Johnson, age 73, of Molls Creek Community passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015.

Billy was born February 3, 1942 a son of the late Nat Johnson and the late Pearl Austin Johnson.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters: Lorraine Johnson, Mary Ellen Johnson, and Irene Johnson; brothers: Stanford Johnson and James Johnson; sister-in-law: Lucille Johnson and nephew: Michael Johnson.

Survivors include: Three sisters: Marie Salyer and husband Donald Salyer, Abingdon, VA; Elaine Helbert and husband Marvin Helbert and Sandra Dorton and husband Russell Dorton, all of Castlewood; Two sisters-in-law: Martha Johnson, Abingdon, VA and Mary Johnson, Bristol, VA; Three brothers: Elmer Johnson, Marvin Johnson and wife Sarah and Ramond (Tene) Johnson, all of Castlewood; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Jessica Johnson for the love and care of Billy during his illness.

Mary Alice Clark

LEBANON, VA-Mary Alice Clark, age 89, died peacefully on July 16, 2015 with family and friends by her side. She was a resident of Maple Grove Nursing Home in Lebanon, Virginia where she received excellent care, support and love. Alice was a wonderful mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend to many. She loved everyone she met and truly cherished spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her children and their spouses; Judy and Gary Crowder, Kay Hale, Carrol and Ruth Ann Clark, Sammy and Jean Clark, Danny and Glenna Clark, Greg and Lorri Clark and Pat and Teri Clark; grandchildren Jennifer Clancy, Rebecca Braddock, Tashia Stufflestreet, Devin Clark, Eric Clark, Jared Clark, Jessica Hale, Clark Crowder, Casie Clark, Robin Musick, Amanda Hale, Molly Clark, Ryne Clark, Annie Clark, and Adam Clark, and eight great-grandchildren that she loved dearly. Her life was also graced with special friends who provided her love and support, including Bessie Wilmoth, Tammy Lasley, Julie Wolfe,Lois Morrison and Ginger Elswick. She was preceded in death by her husband Bascom Clark, daughter Jean Nunley and two infant children.

The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Saturday, July 18th at funeral home. Funeral services will be held immediately after at 7:30 pm with the Rev. Don Bush officiating. Burial will be conducted at 11 am Sunday, July 19, 2015 in Forest Hill Memory Gardens in Abingdon. Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers. Those attending are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:00 am to go in procession to the cemetery.

    I am so sorry for your loss. As a mother I know exactly the hurt and pain you are feeling for I loss my son back in 2001. And if it wasn’t for the Lord’s help I would have never made it through this terrible ordeal. I pray that you lean on Jesus in this time of sorrow and let him help you through this. God is our refuge in our time of need. I pray God gives you all the strength that you need.Lord I ask you to help this family in their time of sorrow in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

    To Elane’s Family:
    I want to express my sadness at hearing of Elane’s passing.
    I am proud to say that Elane and I were sisters-in-law for many years. I always appreciated her for the way she would “tell it like it is”. You always knew where you stood with Elane, that was so refreshing. Althought it has been several years since I had seen Elane, I still thought the world of her and remember the good times that we shared back then. She was an intelligent, beautiful woman and an extremely proud mother. I am honored to have been her sister-in-law. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, Bret and Jacyln, she will be missed.

    Karen Robinson was my BFF for the last 14 yrs, she was such a great friend to everyone that she came into contact with. I miss her so much, she was more than a friend, she was my sister in heart. Love you Karen, but I know that we will see each other again in Heaven. Give my nephew, Dominic Hugh, a hug and kiss and tell him I love him from his Aunt.
