Dan J. Cook

LEBANON, VA- Dan J. Cook, age 77, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at his home with his family by his side.

Dan was born June 19, 1939, a son of Roby and Vinnie Arms Cook. He was employed by Clinchfield Coal Corporation for 21 years, and a member of the U.M.W.A., after retirement he was an employee of Combs Funeral Service. Dan was a member of Cliffield Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son: Danny (Hank) Cook; five brothers: Howard, Thurman, Dean, Jay and Ray Cook; one sister: Dorothy Cook.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years: Pinkie Sword Cook; one daughter: Debra (Cookie) Kiser and husband Tim; three sisters: Margaret Musick, Patty Musick and Wanda Robertson and husband J.P.; three grandchildren: Ann Baker and husband David, Kimberly Fletcher and husband Jamie and Daniel Kiser; four great-grandchildren: Adrianna Baker, I.J. Kiser and Azrionna Kiser and Korbin Fletcher; two brothers-in-law: Fred Sword and friend Rita Musick and Don Sword and wife Rhonda; sisters-in-law: Faye Cook and Phyllis Cook; one special sister-in-law: Nellie Stevens; and aunt: Eva Lou; also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted 2 pm Friday, May 26, 2017 in Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Brother Keith Matney and Brother Jeff Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. The family will receive friends after 6 pm Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Don Sword, Tony Cook, Josh Cook, Mike Musick, Chris Musick, Mike Sword, Travis Turner and Ancil Murphy. Honorary pallbearers will be former co-workers of Clinchfield Coal Corporation, members of Cliffield Church of Christ and co-workers of Combs Funeral Service.

Jane Ella P. Sword

LEBANON, VA- Jane P. Sword, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Maple Grove Nursing Facility, following a courageous battle with dementia. She was born on May 18, 1929, to the late Con and Grace Puckett. Jane worked for the Russell County Schools as a teacher’s aide and a substitute teacher for many years. She was a lifelong member of Lebanon Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Kenneth Sword; sister: Mildred Carter; brothers: Marvin Puckett and June Puckett. Survivors include one son: David Sword and wife Christy; two daughters: Ann McReynolds and husband Terry, Connie Wells and husband Mike; six grandchildren: Tessa Dawson and husband Brandon, Andy Sword and wife Jessica, Taylor Sword and wife Nikki, Wayne Merritt and wife Casey, Zane McReynolds, Zack McReynolds; two great grandchildren: Aubrey and Camden Dawson; brother-in-law: Giles Carter; and several special nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7pm Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Lebanon Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Edwards and Randy Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 5pm till 7pm prior to the service at the church.

The burial will be 11am, Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon, VA. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:30am to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Allen Carter, Darrell Puckett, Larry Hartsock, and grandsons.

ABINGDON, VA- Berkley Dean Fields, age 69, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 18, 2017 with his family by his side.

Dean was born July 23, 1947, and was preceded in death by his wife: Stella Hay Fields, father: James A. Fields, Sr., mother: Merle Harrison Fields and step-mother: Austine M. Fields. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School and Russell County Vocational School. Dean was an employee of Empire Ford in Abingdon and Hansonville Repair Shop at Hansonville and a proud member of Mount Olive Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters: Louise Bledsoe and husband Jerry, and Deana Moore and husband David; Brothers: James A. Fields, Jr., and friend Judy Williams, Giles (Smokey) Fields and wife Wanda, Jackie Combs and wife Brenda, Frank (Shorty) Combs and wife Linda, Ronnie Combs and wife Diane, and Berton Combs and wife Barbara; one sister: Eva Kate Combs; five grandchildren: Rick Edmiston, Joshua Edmiston, Kolton Powers, Morgan Mowdy and Rhaygan Moore; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews survive.

Jo Ella Maxfield Honaker

HONAKER, VA- Jo Ella Maxfield Honaker, age 88, went to be home with the Lord with her family by her side. Jo Ella was born December 11, 1928, a daughter of the late Charles and the late Della Gamble Maxfield. She was the wife of the late Chester Honaker, and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.

   In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one grandson: Bobby Wayne Shell; daughter-in-law: Naomi Honaker; two sons-in-law: Wayne Shell and Jerry B. Smith; two sisters: Kitty Poskas and Bennie Statzer; one brother: Dave Maxfield.

   Survivors include five daughters: Stella Shell, Ann Honaker and husband Dan, Sandy McGlothlin and husband Ronald, Janie Smith and husband Rick, and Loretta Lynn Perkins and husband Steve; five sons: Howard J. Honaker, Arch Honaker and wife Gin; Woodrow Honaker and wife Maxie, Randall Honaker, and Roy Honaker and wife Bev; two brothers: Don Maxfield and wife Nina, and John Maxfield and wife Rosemary; one sister-in-law: Sally Massie and husband James; 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews survive; and  special care giver: Randall Honaker of the home.

   The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday, May 20th 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Steve Perkins, Rev. Rick Smith and Rev. David Perkins officiating. LeRoy N. Hilton Jr.

ST .PAUL, VA- LeRoy N. Hilton Jr., age 93, passed away Monday, May 15, 2017 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. Mr. Hilton was born November 25, 1923, he was a son of the late LeRoy N. Hilton, Sr. and Hannah Jane Stanley Hilton. LeRoy was a graduate of St. Paul High School. He was a U.S. Army disabled veteran of WWII and was discharged December 1945 and returned home. He was hired by the U.S. Postal Service in 1946, retiring after years of service. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of St. Paul and was active with many committees of the church. Leroy was a member and Past President of Lake Bonaventure Country Club where he was an avid golfer and fisherman and was club champion for thirteen years. He was a former member of the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department and he served on several committees within the town and Wise County. Mr. Hilton was a lover of hunting and wood carving. He was considered the town historian and a published author.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years: Arlie May Hilton; two brothers: Chad Sr. and Shelby Sr.; two sisters: Wilma and June; sister-in-law: Bonnie; Nephew: Johnathan; and mother-in-law: Dana Combs.

Survivors include one son: LeRoy N. “Tripper” Hilton III; one daughter: Melonie Hilton Edwards;; one grandson: Nathan Edwards and wife Katie; one great-granddaughter: Julianna G. Edwards; one surviving sister-in-law: Kate, and several nieces, nephews, and great nephews.

A joint memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Samuel Mark Artrip

CLEVELAND, VA- Samuel Mark Artrip, age 59, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mark was born January 8, 1958 in Lebanon. He was a son of Phyllis and Samuel (Choke) Artrip.

He was a career employee of Norfolk Southern Railroad and a lifetime outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his sister Shanon Artrip Collins.

Survivors include his wife Roxie Artrip; three sons: Adam Artrip and wife Beth; Brandon Artrip and wife Emily; Joshua Artrip and one daughter Danielle Artrip; two step-children: T.J. Hill and wife Chelsey and Amy Hill; eight grandchildren: Isaiah, Mason, Ella, Marcus, Brooklyn, Justice, Shawntel and London; brother: Benny Artrip and wife Michelle; sister: Janet Bussey. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Rick Smith and Rev. Virgil Musick officiating. The family will receive friends 5:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Lebanon, VA- John (J.C.) Arrington, age 87, went to be with the Lord May 6, 2017 surrounded by his family.

J.C. was born April 16, 1930 in Cleveland, VA, a son of the late Dewey and Lettie Arrington. He was employed for 42 years by the U.S. Postal Service. J.C. was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church and attended Cedar Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers: Ralph Arrington and Donald Arrington.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years: Betty Smith Arrington; two sons: Victor C. Arrington and wife Dimple, Fort Walton Beach, FL; and John D. Arrington, Lebanon, VA; one sister: Virginia Robertson, Bowling Green, KY; also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted 7 pm Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. J.C. Steele officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 pm until 7 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be conducted 11 am Wednesday, May 10, 2017 in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the mausoleum.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years: Ronnie Lowe; two daughters: Rachel Jetter and husband Jason, Tazewell; and Ashley White, Lebanon; one son: Xavier Lowe, Honaker; four sisters: Nancy Tuggle, Lebanon; Janet Fields, Lebanon; Mary Musick, Lebanon; and Tammy Honaker, Rosedale; three brothers: Johnny Tuggle, Lebanon; James Tuggle; and Bobby Tuggle, Lebanon; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews survive.

Lloyd R. (Sonny) Smith, Jr.    

LEBANON, VA- Lloyd R. (Sonny) Smith, Jr., age 60, went to be with the Lord Monday, May 1, 2017 in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.

Sonny was born May 3, 1956, a son of the late Lloyd R. Smith, Sr., and Marion Brooks Smith. He was a retired Transportation Construction Inspector Senior for Virginia Department of Transportation for 37 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister: Susan Smith Sweeney.

Survivors include one sister: Shirley Smith Brewer and husband Bobby, Abingdon, VA; one brother: William Harold Smith, Lebanon, VA; brother-in-law: Scotty Sweeney, Melbourne, FL; several nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Brewer, Travis Brewer, Patty Sweeney Wallace and husband Gordon and James Sweeney; and two great nieces: Lilly and Grace.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Wellmont Cancer Center, staff of Wellmont Medical Associates Oncology & Hematology, staff of Wellmont Hospice House and Dr. Shao.

 HANSONVILLE, VA- Susan Browning Cook Conner, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Friday April 28, 2017. Susan will always be remembered as a compassionate and encouraging person. She had a gift of being able to make each person she met feel loved and welcome.

BELFAST, VA- Dewey Ronald (Ron) Helton, age 63, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday April 11, 2017, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 6, 1953 in Lebanon, VA; son of the late Dewey V. and Rosa Statzer Helton.

He was a retired Human Services Counselor with Family Preservation Services, Cedar Bluff Region for 15 years. Ron was a member and deacon of Community Heights Church, where he taught a Sunday School class for special needs adults.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his brother Howard (Sweet Pea) Helton.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years: Christine Vencill Helton; one daughter: Melanie Helton Monk and husband Brandon (Tater); his mother: Rosa Statzer Helton; special mother-in-law: Mary Ellen Vencill; one sister: Reatha Helton Cole and husband, David; one brother: Randy G. Helton and wife, Sherry; two grandchildren: Steel (Teel Man) Monk and Riley (Mo) Monk; sister-in-law: Vicky Helton; two brothers-in-law: Sam Vencill and wife, Carol, and Johnny Vencill and wife Gail; also several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many special close friends.

Arlie May Hilton

ST.PAUL, VA- Arlie May Hilton, age 90, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017 at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Arlie and Dana Hall Combs. Mrs. Hilton was a resident of St. Paul for 70 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Paul and was active at the Food Pantry with the church. She had worked as a Teachers Aid at the school and a supervisor at J. Fred Matthews Library.

Survivors include her husband of 70 years: Leroy Hilton, Jr.; one daughter: Melonie Hilton Edwards; one son: Leroy Nathaniel Hilton, III; one grandson: Nathan Edwards and wife Katie; one great-granddaughter: Julianna; and several nieces and nephews survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jimmy Castle

CLEVELAND, VA – Jimmy Castle, age 81, went to be with the Lord, April 7, 2017 at Russell County Medical Center, after a long battle with black lung and lung cancer. He was born July 4, 1935 in Trammell, a son of the late Nelson and Donna Austin Castle.

He was a disabled coal miner, he loved fishing and hunting, he was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #254 A.F & A.M.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son: Dwayne Castle; two brothers: Willie Napier Castle, Lloyd Castle and one half brother: George Miller; half-sister: Ruth Miller Taylor.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years: Shirley Chaffin Castle; one daughter: Christine Powers; one son: Alvin Castle; two brothers: Earl Castle and George Marvin Castle and wife Jeneine; one granddaughter: Pamela Powers; one grandson: Phillip Powers II and wife Caitlin; one great granddaughter: Baylee Franklin; his dog: Annabelle; and several nieces and nephews. Special niece Geraldine Castle and two special nephews: Hobert “Boo” Phillips and Gerald Phillips.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 PM Monday April 10, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5PM till 7PM prior to the service. Masonic rights will be conducted at 6:45 PM prior to the service by Clinchfield Lodge #254 A.F. & A.M. Burial will be Tuesday April 11, 2017 in the Temple Hill Memorial Park at 11 AM. Those wishing to attend will need to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Phillip Powers II; Hobert “Boo” Phillips; Gerald Phillips; Little Mack Castle; Will Castle; Josh Phillips; Jack Perkins; and Christopher Penton. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Robert Castle; James Chaffin JR.; Glenn Castle and Phillip Powers Sr. Military Honors will be conducted by Lebanon V.F.W. post #9864.

James E. Grizzle

CLEVELAND, VA- James E. Grizzle, age 69, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in Bristol Regional Hospital following a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents: James A. and Trula Duncan Grizzle; daughter: Renee Beavers; and sister: Jewell McReynolds.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years: Kimberly Cress Grizzle; four daughters: Debbie Jacobs, Karen Hubble and husband Rick, Angie Nuckles and husband Shane and Nichole and husband Benny; five sons: James E. Grizzle, Jr. and wife Lonzetta, Anthony Grizzle and wife Paula, Brandon Grizzle and wife Shawna, Justen Grizzle and wife Tiffany and Austin Grizzle and wife Maurisa; six sisters: Betty Grizzle, Jo Dotson and husband Tad; Nona Jones, Charlene and husband Dave Witt, Louise Witt and Becky Grizzle; one brother: Michael Grizzle and wife Phillis; 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday, April 8, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow in the Cress Family Cemetery in Castlewood, VA. The family will receive friends noon until 2 pm prior to the service at the funeral home and at the home of Julia Cress 1192 Sunny Point Road, Castlewood, VA and at other times. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Tippy Joe Kiser

Tippy Joe Kiser, age 67, passed away after a long battle with COPD April 3, 2017. He was born on September 23, 1949, a son of the late Joe E Kiser and Virginia Kiser.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister: Sara Kiser; and son: Brian Shepard.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years: Brenda Kiser; son: Jerry Shepard; daughter: Pat Deskins and husband Dean; grandson: Dalton Deskins; granddaughter: Nikki Shepard; mother-in-law: Helen Rose; sister: Thelma Walters; special aunt: Grace Parrott; several cousins; a very special “adopted” son: Mike Lawson; and the “OLD GANG”.

Tippy Joe requested no visitation or services. A special thank you to all of the friends and neighbors for all the calls, texts, and visits. Thank you to the Wellmont Hospice Group and Advanced Home Care. A special thank you to Hope, Angie, and Laura; and to everyone at McFarlane Hillman Pharmacy.

Clyde Harry Fife

Clyde Harry Fife, age 80, departed this life on Sunday, April 2, 2017.

He was born on April 11, 1936 in Russell County, Virginia, a son of the late George Dewey Fife and Hattie Alice Harrison Fife.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers: Claude Fife; Herman Fife and James Fife; Niece: Dana Barton; and nephews Tommy and Bobby Fife.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Susie Barton Fife; daughters: Pamela Fife and Janet (Jay) Kennedy; grandchildren: Austin-AJ (Angela) Kennedy, Alex (Keely) Kennedy; and Kathrynn (B.J.) Fink;

Great-grandchildren: Astelle and Ryleigh Kennedy; sisters-in-law: Bertha Fife, Phyllis Fife and Charlotte Barton; nieces: Carolyn Aper, Connie Treadway, Mary Dzuro, Ellen Eigenbrod, Cheryl Grille and Leisa McCall; nephew: Jamie Fife; great-nieces and nephews, cousins and loving friends.

Mr. Fife worked for Babcock and Wilcox Construction Company for almost 40 years, traveling all over the United States with work that he loved, until his retirement in 1996. He was proudly a Mason, 32nd Degree, a Shriner and an Honorable Kentucky Colonel.

The funeral service will be conducted 7 pm Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Tom Edwards and the Rev. Jay Kennedy officiating. Burial will be 11 am Thursday in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. The family will receive friends 5 pm until 7 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Alex Kennedy, A.J. Kennedy, Michael Barton, Rick McIntyre, Marty Dzuro, Claude Rasnake and Michael Eigenbrod. Tom Boyd, Dennis Green, Ron Proffitt, Larry Miller, David Barton and friends from Spring City and Lebanon Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated for St. Judes Childrens Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105, Hope Tree Family Services, 860 Mount Vernon Lane, Salem, VA 24153 or Lebanon Baptist Church, 182 Main Street, Lebanon, VA 24266.
