James (Joe) Gordon Puckett, Sr.

LEBANON, VA- James (Joe) Gordon Puckett, Sr., went to be with the Lord in his heavenly home on Thursday, April 28, 2016. 2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

James was 82 years old. He grew up in Cleveland, Va, and resided in Lebanon, Va. He was the last surviving child of Garland Puckett and Gracie Meade Puckett.

James was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years: Elizabeth Blake Puckett; one son: James (Jim) Puckett, Jr.; and 10 sisters and 3 brothers.

He is survived by his daughters: Doris Pruitt and husband Mark, Gloria Puckett and Teresa Puckett Ray; one son: Randy Puckett and wife Lori; grandchildren: Jessica Allen, Keith Pruitt, Kyle Pruitt, Kimberly Dorton, Wesley Dorton, Nathanael Ray, Eric Puckett, Heather Puckett and Courtney Puckett; great-grandchildren: Colton Allen, Skyler Dorton, Molly Puckett, Tyler Puckett, Dominic Puckett, Madison Hill, Easton Pruitt and Kylen Pruitt.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 pm Saturday, April 30, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. James Nunley officiating. The family will receive friends 5 pm until 7 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be conducted 1 PM Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 to go in procession to the cemetery. Bonnie Gray Stevens

LEBANON, VA- Bonnie Gray Stevens, age 42, went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 23, 2016.

Bonnie was born January 12, 1974 in Lebanon, VA a daughter of Steve Gray and Sarah Boothe Gray. She was of the Christian faith and a graduate of Lebanon High School, class of 1992. She had been employed by Hilman Insurance.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents: Gilbert and Bertie Gray and Ford and Mary Boothe: paternal father-in-law: Harold D. Stevens.

Survivors include her husband of 22 years: Greg Stevens; one son: Nash C. Stevens, of the home; parents: Steve Gray, St. Paul, VA and Sarah Boothe Gray, Lebanon, VA; one sister: Patty Ray and husband Ricky, Abingdon, VA; two nephews: Jessie and Henry, Abingdon, VA; mother-in-law: Nellie Sword Stevens, Belfast, VA; special friends: Kimberly and Jamie Fletcher and Korbin, Hunter Milton, Jon Reynolds, Zac Kiser, Ben Rasnake and Jared Steffey, and Brooke Kiser; Also several aunts, uncles and cousins survive.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 pm Wednesday, April 27, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Dewey Helbert and Keith Matney officiating. Evelyn McClellan Gilmer

ELK GARDEN, VA- Evelyn McClellan Gilmer, 92, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016 in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon, Va.

She was a native of Bristol, TN and the daughter of Lotus Agee and Elbert S. McClellan. She attended Bristol, TN. public schools and graduated in 1941. In 1944 she graduated magna cum laude from King College with a B.A. in English and foreign languages. Before getting married in 1949, she taught at Virginia High School in Bristol. In 1965 she began a new career as a social worker for the Russell County Department of Social Services in Lebanon, Va. In 1986 she retired from there as a supervisor. She was a member of Dennison United Methodist Church in Rosedale, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh M. Gilmer, Sr.: her brother, Paul S. McClellan, Sr.; and three sisters, Dorothy M. Trinkle, Eula Jean M. Whitaker and Mildred L. McClellan.

She is survived by three sons, Hugh M. Gilmer, Jr. (Monty), Joseph Michael Gilmer and Roger Keith Gilmer, all of Rosedale, VA.; one sister, Marian M. Turner, of Bristol, VA.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Katie Miller and Samantha Lane, of Home Nursing Company, for their excellent care. Sincere thanks to a special niece, Deborah Whitaker, and a special friend, Janie Edwards, for their love and devotion.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 pm Sunday, April 24, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Paul Hite officiating. The family will receive friends after 6 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be conducted at 2 pm Monday, April 25, 2016 in the Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, TN. Walter James (Jim) Dotson

CLEVELAND, VA-Walter James (Jim) Dotson, age 77, passed away at his home Wednesday, April 20, 2016 following a brief illness.

Jim was born August 11, 1938 in Russell County, a son of the late Sam Dotson and Blanche Taylor Dotson and was the husband of the late Deloras Jean Smith Dotson. He was the owner and operator of Jims Machine Shop and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Jim was a member of Copper Ridge Baptist Church.

In addition to his father and wife he was preceded in death by a son: James Andrew Dotson.

Survivors include one grandson: Evan Tasher Dotson, of the home; mother: Blanche Taylor Dotson, Castlewood, VA; two sisters: Sue Elliott Hensley and husband Dan, Pinehurst, NC; and Mary Lynn McGlothlin, Castlewood, VA; one brother: Sammy Dotson and wife Linda, Elkton, MD; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with The Rev. Duane Musick officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. A gathering of family and friends will be from noon until 2:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. June Estelle Garrett Price

CORN VALLEY, VA- June Estelle Garrett Price, age 85, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2016 in the Russell County Medical Center.

June was born July 2, 1930, a daughter of the late Ross and Mary Alice Holmes Garrett and the wife of the late Glenford H. (Matt) Price. She was a retired home bound teacher for the Russell County School Board. She was a member of the Lebanon Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her sisters: Burita Garrett and Ruth Trivett; and one brother: Clifford Garrett.

Survivors include two daughters: Vivian Blankenship and husband Robert, Glade Spring, VA; and Revonda Meade and husband Jackie, Corn Valley, VA; one son: Donald C. Price and wife Catherine, Lebanon, VA; six grandchildren: Kevin, Sara, Rachel, Laura, Jessica and Morgan; six great-grandchildren: Anthony, Isaiah, Zachary, Isaac, McKenzie and Elijah; two sisters: Reola Rhea, Columbia, S.C.; and Bonnie Francisco and husband Giles, Lebanon, VA; one brother: Clyde Garrett and wife Linda, Corn Valley, VA; special friend: Patty Gray, Castlewood, VA; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

Stella Kiser Dotson  

ABINGDON, VA- Stella Kiser Dotson, age 81, passed to heaven Sunday, April 10, 2016 in Bristol Regional Medical Center with her daughter by her side.

Stella was born January 14, 1935 at the family home, a daughter of the late Silas and Hattie Hargis Kiser and the wife of the late Harry R. Dotson. She was employed for 35 years by A.S.C.S. in Russell County, and was a long time member of Mill Creek Baptist Church prior to moving to Abingdon. Then becoming a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Abingdon.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by five brothers: Glenn, Judson, Carlton, Paul and Kermit Kiser; five sisters: Katherine Brown, Jane Fuller, Nell Addison, Ruth Johnson and Mary Clark.

Survivors include one daughter: Alice Dotson-Bass and husband Bill Bass, Bristol, VA; one sister: Nancy Stallard, Pocahontas, VA; two brothers: Ralph Kiser and wife Sue, Honaker, VA and Kyle J. Kiser and wife Ruth, Castlewood, VA; brother-in-law: Carl C. Clark, Bristol, TN; two sisters-in-law: Helen Fuller Kiser, Cleveland, VA; and Dorothy Jackson Kiser, Goodview, VA; Also several nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of B.R.M.C., C.V.I.C.U. and third floor staff, Dr. Marcus Williams and Dr. David Becker for the care and compassion shown to Stella.

Nell Louise Settle Lester

BELFAST, VA- Nell Louise Settle Lester, age 88, went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 2, 2016 in Maple Grove Health Care with her family by her side.

Nell was born September 9, 1927 at Kents Ridge VA, a daughter of the late Preston Marion Settle and the late Louise Annie Jones Settle and the wife of the late James Howard Lester. She went to school at Stuart Institute in Belfast, Belfast Elementary and was a graduate of Lebanon High School. Nell worked as a cook at Belfast Elementary School. Then moving to Danville, VA where she worked as a Weaver at Dan River Mills from October 29, 1946 until April 25, 1968, when she became disabled. She was of the Methodist faith. She was cared for by her family.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by four brothers: Glenn Allen Settle, Kyle Settle, Benny Settle and Marvin Settle; two sisters: Jean Settle Mutter and Shirley Settle Hess.

Survivors include her sisters: Mary Settle Elliott, Danville, VA; Lula Settle Jackson, Martinsville, VA; and Dorothy Settle Sword, Belfast, VA; brother: Clyde Settle and wife Betty, Lebanon, VA; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

LEBANON, VA- James Gordan (Jim) Puckett, Jr. age, 54 passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at his home.

Jim was born February 19, 1962 in Wooster, OH a son of James Gordan Puckett and the late Elizabeth Blake Puckett. He had lived in Russell County the past 46 years. Jim is an employee of Appalachian Power, Clinch River Plant with 30 plus years of service. He was a member of Kettlefoot Rod & Gun Club.

Survivors include his father: James Gordan Puckett, Lebanon; three sisters: Doris Pruitt and husband Mark, Lebanon; Gloria Puckett, Lebanon; and Teresa Puckett Ray, Lebanon; one brother: Randy Puckett and wife Lori, Mt Airy, NC; He was a beloved uncle to nine nieces and nephews; Jessie, Keith, Kyle, Kimberly, Wesley, Eric, Heather, Courtney and Nathan; and his beloved pets: Sammie and Patches.

Robert L. Williams

Nickelsville, Va-Robert L. Williams, III, age 62, went to be with the Lord on Saturday afternoon March 26, 2016.

Robert was born September 10, 1953 in Kingsport, Tn. the son of the late Robert L. Williams, Jr. and Ruth Stallard Williams. A graduate of Twin Springs High School class of 1971 and a graduate of Highlands Community College and Tusculum College. He went to work for Eastman in April 1976 as an Electrical Engineer Technician retiring on October 30, 2003 with 28 and a half years of service.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gate City, Va. Robert was a Christian in wanting everyone to know Jesus Christ. Robert was an avid NASCAR fan. Robert came back to Donna’s family farm to be a helping hand with cattle.

Robert was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law Paul and Velma Fields.

Survivors include his wife of 15 and a half years, Donna Fields Williams and a

host of first cousins, neighbors and friends whom he loved dearly.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 in Combs Funeral Service chapel with Pastor Andy Barnes and Jeff DeBoard officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. The family will receive family and friends one hour prior to the service. Jeff Williams  

LEBANON, VA-Jeff Williams, beloved husband, father, and pastor, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 24, 2016. Jeff was survived by his loving wife, Peggy, 4 daughters – Andrea, Bethany, Merritt, and Melody – and their husbands, along with 14 grandchildren. Jeff was first a servant of his God, spending his life devoted to sharing the love of Christ with everyone he encountered. He relentlessly pursued the call of Jesus over his life and poured his heart out into this community and his church – Lebanon Community Fellowship. Jeff not only served his community well, but passionately served his family with a steady and faithful love. One of his greatest joys in life was simply being with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. Jeff loved to laugh and share his joy with those around him, encouraging the brokenhearted and affirming the freedom of Jesus Christ in their lives. His reach was far and his love for God’s kingdom was deep. Lebanon, Virginia will forever be changed by Jeff’s desire for the restoration and hope we have in Jesus.

Cleveland, VA- Ralph W. Davis, age 91, finished his course on earth and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 18, 2016. He was born in the Mill Creek section of Russell County, a son of Wilson and Nellie Mays Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Davis and sister Mary Jane Davis.

Ralph was a lifelong farmer in Russell County, cultivating strong family and community ties. He was a longtime member of Spring City Baptist Church where he served as Treasurer for 41 years. A dependable friend and neighbor, he lived his faith daily by setting a good example for others to follow. Always willing to assist anyone in need, he will be remembered for his quiet compassion, long–lasting friendship, and subtle humor.

Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Mildred Smith Davis, three daughters, Betty McEntyre and husband Ron, Carolyn Williams and husband Buddy, and Nina Cousins and husband Bill; six grandchildren, Michael McEntyre and wife Carol, Christi Massengill, David Williams, Chris Williams and wife Julia, Katie Cousins and Jonathan Cousins; six great-grandchildren, Patrick Massengill, Megan Massengill, Nathan McEntyre, Marin McEntyre, Anderson Williams and Emerson Williams; and special family friend Steve Kiser and wife Debbie.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the Cleveland Lifesaving Crew, the staff of Kissito Healthcare at Maple Grove, and the staff of RCMC Hospice for the compassionate care they provided during his illness.

The funeral service will be held 7 pm, Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Spring City Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Brown, Rev. Jason Wilson and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 pm prior to the service at the church. Entombment will be held at 11 am Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon with Rev. Nathan Brown officiating. LEBANON, VA- Cecil William King, age 92, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 16, 2016 in Wellmont Hospice with his family by his side.

Cecil was born July 16, 1923 in Russell County, a son of the late Jett King and Martha Lilly King. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife and mother of his children Billie Ann Chafin King. Cecil was owner and operator of Kings Body Shop in Hansonville. He was of the Methodist faith, and a member and past Mastor of Stuart Masonic Lodge # 224 A.F. & A.M.

In addition to his parents and 1st wife he was preceded in death by his son: Gaines Stephenson King and eight siblings.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years: Dorothy King; two daughters: Anna Jean Osborne and husband Garland, Kingsport, TN; and Martha Rosella Carrier and husband Steve, Dallas, TX; one son: William T. King and wife Nancy, Lebanon; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister: Juanita Cumbo, Kingsport, TN; Also several nieces, nephews and one great-niece; Maya Stanley.

James Thomas (Tom) Robinson, Jr.

LEBANON, VA- James Thomas (Tom) Robinson, Jr. age 62, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at his home.

Tom was born May 27, 1953 in Lebanon, a son of James Thomas Robinson Sr., and Betty Lasley Robinson. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School class of 1971 and Clinch Valley College in 1975. He received a Bachelors in History, and two Masters Degrees, one from Radford University in Administration and Supervision and a Masters from Emory & Henry College in History. Tom was employed by the Russell School Board for 37 years, retiring in 2012. He had served in many positions, retiring as assistant principal of Belfast-Elk Garden. He was a member of Willis Chapel United Methodist Church. Tom was loved by all and he loved all especially the elderly and children.

CASTLEWOOD,VA- Frankie Scott Jordan, age 51, passed away unexpectedly at home surrounded by his family. He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and loved farming and hunting but most of all his family. He was a former employee of George Jordan Paving and Construction and W&L Construction and was currently employed by Rogers Group. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father Clarence (Jave) Jordan, his mother Maggie (Mommer) Cantrell Jordan and his sister Laura (Sis) Jordan.

Frankie is survived by his wife of 25 years Patricia (Trish) Jordan, two sons he loved very much Cody and Tyler Jordan, one brother George (Bill) Jordan and wife Doris Jean, one nephew Shawn Jordan, one great nephew Rylan Jordan, two great nieces McKenna and Pressley, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Anna Lee and Jim Fields and several aunts, uncles and cousins and special cousins Lorrie, Hannah and Bri also survive.

CLEVELAND, VA – Dorse Earl Campbell, age 89, went to be with the Lord, Friday March 11, 2016 at Commonwealth Memory Care. Born September 18, 1926 in Cleveland, the son of the late Dorse Campbell and Blanche Sutherland Campbell of Cleveland. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. A member of Cleveland Baptist Church where he served as trustee and a former treasurer of the church. Earl was a retired employee of Appalachian Power, Clinch River Plant.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul D. Campbell.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years: Ruby Campbell; one daughter, Robin Campbell, Christiansburg; two sons, Paul Campbell and wife Patricia, Cleveland; Garry Campbell and wife Carol Anne, Dungannon; two granddaughters he adored, Kelly Campbell and Jodi Campbell, two nephews, Johnny Campbell and Carl (Bo) Campbell; extended family Woody Hackney and family, Pidge Hackney and family and Jess Hackney and family; numerous great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces.

CLEVELAND, VA- Ronald D. (Cotten) Breeding, age 70, of the Spring City community passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016 at his home due to complications of Alzheimer’s.

Cotten was born May 16, 1945 in Richlands, a son of the late Lacy and Vivian Skeens Breeding. He was a 1963 graduate of Cleveland High School and U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for several construction companies. He was of the Baptist faith. Cotten loved to fish, hunt and Nascar Racing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter: Janie Renee Breeding.

Johnny was born in Dungannon, VA a son of the late Marion Stonewall Laney and the late Ora Stapleton Laney. He was employed by Walmart for the past 10 years and a member of The River Church.

LEBANON, VA- Rusty Lee Cox, age 66, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at his home.

Rusty was born April 13, 1949 in Russell County, a son of the late Grundy and the late Dorothy E. Chaffin. He was the last surviving member of his imitate family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

LEBANON, VA- Virginia A. (Jenny) Fields, age 67, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family and friends.

Virginia was the daughter of the late Bert Artrip and Gaynell Artrip. She was raised in the Nashs’ Ford community. A graduate of Cleveland High School and from Bristol Business College. She was an employee of theTelephone Company, before coming a secretary for her husband Trigg Fields.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Trigg Fields; brother, sister and in law: Ira and Sherry Artrip.

Survivors include her sister: Becky Artrip; step-son: Greg Fields and wife Janet; three nieces: Sabrina Artrip, Sherry Dowdy and husband Charles, and Jannifer Hendrickson and husband Carl; nephew: Brett Whitt; and a special and dear friend: Heather Castle.

James Leonard (Babe) Alexander

LEBANON, VA-James Leonard (Babe) Alexander, age 90 was called by God and taken by His angels to his eternal rest on February 16, 2016. James was born on January 15, 1926 in Lebanon, Virginia to Samuel and Sarah Eula Alexander.

He received his early education from the Russell County School System. After leaving school, James upped his age to enter the Armed Forces. He was a proud Veteran who served in the United States Navy. James’ favorite pastime was cooking and fellowshipping with his old Railroad Buddy “Kelly B. Gresby, Jr. every chance he got.

He was a retired Railroad worker from the Norfolk and Western Railroad. He was an active member of Lebanon Chapel AME Zion Church, Lebanon, Virginia until his failing health. He was united in Holy matrimony to the late Cleo Scales in 1947. James loved people and he knew no strangers.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, 5 brothers and 5 sisters. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lucile A. Brown, Roanoke, Virginia,  sisters-in-law,  brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and other family members. He will be sadly missed by two Special Friends, Brother Kelly B. Gresby, Jr. and Brother William Foster.

There will be a Visitation Viewing on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 6pm – 8pm at the Combs Funeral Chapel. Services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 1:00pm at the Combs Funeral Chapel at 291 Fincastle Road, Lebanon, Virginia with Reverends Justina Young and Jimmy Ellis officiating. BELFAST, VA.-Sarah Katherine “Kate” Taylor Witt, age 79, of the Belfast community went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 13, 2016 due to injuries sustained in a fall.

Kate was born December 12, 1936 at her family home in Belfast, VA. She was the oldest living member of the Dennison United Methodist Church. She also attended Belfast United Methodist Church.

Kate was the daughter of the late Bert Taylor and the late Bess Jackson Taylor. She was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Taylor, and one son Doug Witt.

Kate is survived by her husband of 61 years, Clarence Edward Witt; one brother, Harvey Taylor and wife Barbara; one sister-in-law, Judy Taylor; daughter Jackie Wallace and husband Tim of Cleveland, VA; son David Witt of Belfast, VA; son Tim Witt and wife Jill of Belfast, VA; son Jim Witt and wife Frances of Belfast, VA; daughter Kim Nielsen and husband Robert of Johnson City, TN; daughter-in-law Tammy Witt of Copper Creek, VA.

She is survived by ten grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Dit”: Charity Witt, Nathan Witt, Katherine Wallace, Lindsey Wallace, Lori Witt Robinson and husband Devin, Ethan Witt, Blake Witt, Morgan Witt, Josh Witt, and Olivia Witt; two great-grandchildren Chloe Deel and Maggie Cremeans; one great-great-grandson Aiden Cremeans.

Kate loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Kate loved to garden, sew, and quilt and was a wonderful homemaker. Kate also loved her two churches and the time she spent with the members of her Senior Citizens group.

Visitation for Kate will be Thursday, February 18th, 2016 beginning at 5p.m. Funeral will be Friday, February 19th, 2016 at 11:00am in the Combs Funeral Service chapel, Lebanon, VA with Rev. Paul Hite and Rev. Jason Crandal officiating. Burial will follow at the family cemetery in Belfast, Va.             Pallbearers will be Josh Witt, Ethan Witt, Nathan Witt, Blake Witt, Doug Osborne, Robert Nielsen, and Tim Wallace.

LEBANON, VA- Michael D. Wright, age 67, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in Wellmont Regional Medical Center.

Mike was born December 10, 1948 in Pound, VA, a son of Emory Wright and the late Inez Dotson Wright. He was a graduate of Lebanon High and Clinch Valley College. He worked in the coal industry forty years, beginning with Pittston, Cumberland Resources and retiring from Alpha in November 2013. Mike loved spending time with his family, friends and pets. Mike, a lifelong Democrat, enjoyed good food, live music, playing golf and spending time at his cabin on Flat Top Mountain.

Survivors include his wife Diane Dennison Wright; two daughters, whom he loved with all his heart and was so proud of: Eliza Wright, Bluff City, TN; and Meghan Wright Pellegrom and husband Tim, Johnson City, TN; the light of his life, his grandson: Solomon Pellegrom; father: Emory Wright, Lebanon, VA; one brother: Jan Wright and wife Marie, Abingdon, VA; nephews: Josh (Lena), and Jake (Lisalyn); great-nieces and nephews: Peyton, Bailey, Knox and Gray Wright; and his beloved pets: Jagger, Foxy, Lucky, Boo Kitty and Hermione.

Lifelong resident of Lebanon, Va, he was the son of the late Roy and Helen Robinson. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. He was also a graduate of Arty Lee High, in Dante, Va.

James loved people, and would help anyone at anytime! He always had a smile for anyone, and will be dearly missed by the Town of Lebanon!

Johnnie (Vance) Davis

NICKELSVILLE-Johnnie (Vance) Davis, age 67, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 25, 2016 in Holston Valley Medical Center.

Vance was born August 28, 1948 in Russell County a son of the late Fred and Carrie Ball Davis and he was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife Angela Davis; two step-daughters, Linda Carpenter, Norton, Va. and Ginny Whitt, Damascus, Va., one son, Jesse Carpenter, Gate City, two sisters, Pearl Salyers and husband Vance, Kingsport, Tn. And Edith Salyers, Castlewood, three brothers, David Davis and wife Mary, Castlewood, James Davis and wife Judy, Nickelsville and Roy Davis and wife Trish, Castlewood. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Jessie Jones officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2016 in the Grassy Creek Community Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery. Billy D. Rhea

CLINCHFIELD, VA- Billy D. Rhea, age 74, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at his home.

Billy was born June 8, 1941 in Wilder, VA a son of the late William Rhea and the late Tibitha Sexton Rhea. Billy was a retired Coal Miner having worked for Clinchfield Coal Corporation for more than 25 years and was a member of the U.M.W.A. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam Era. Billy was a self-taught musician, he could play any instrument, the fiddle being his favorite. He was a member of the Rabbit Ridge Pea Pickers, having played with the band at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: Sylvia Rhea; 3 sisters and 11 brothers.

Survivors include one daughter: Cathy Mowrey and husband Mike, Lebanon, VA; one son: Gregory Rhea, Cleveland, VA; three grandchildren: Miciah Mowrey, Matthew Mowrey and Hailey Rhea; two brothers: Burl Rhea and wife Lois; and Denver Rhea and wife Karen, all of Cleveland, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 am Monday, January 25, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Danny Rhea and Rev. Michael Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. The family will receive friends after 6 pm Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Miciah and Matthew Mowrey, Dennis Bailey, Johnny Couch, Madison Rhea, Carl Rhea, Leslie Rhea, Dennis Rhea and Allen Rhea. Lillian Dean Cassell

CLEVELAND, VA-Lillian Dean Cassell, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 18, 2016 in the Russell County Medical Center.

She was born April 14, 1925 in Russell County a daughter of the late Bud Vance and Donnie Rasnake Vance. She was the wife of the late Ralph S. Cassell and was a member of Weavers Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by brothers, Lester Vance, Farley Vance, Scoby Vance and one sister, Lou Smith.

Survivors include daughter, Sue Peters and husband Lynn, Elk Garden, VA; son Sam Cassell and wife Paulette, Gray, TN; sister, Linda Warren and husband Raymond, Cleveland, VA; brother, Tip Vance and wife Loretta, Cleveland, VA; granddaughter, Samantha and Josh and great-granddaughter Dagny Hensley, Johnson City, TN.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

CLEVELAND, VA- Samuel (Sam) L. Slate, age 76, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 18, 2016.

Sam was born in Russell County, a son of the late George Alvin Slate and the late Gladys Rebecca Dye Slate. Sam was preceded in death by his wife Linda G. Slate on August 15, 2015. He was a member of Copper Ridge Baptist Church and a disabled mine Electrician and a member of the U.M.W.A.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one sister: Tootsie Rasnake.

Survivors include one daughter: Melinda Conner, St. Paul, VA; two sons: Kevin Slate and wife Amy Z. Slate; and William Slate, Abingdon, VA; five grandchildren: Morgan Conner, Kelsey Slate, Owen Slate, Abigail Slate and Samuel Slate; three sisters: Betty Settle, Lebanon, VA; Margaret Goodman, Johnson City, TN; and Gladys Winchester, North Carolina; two brothers: George Slate and Jerry Slate, both of Lebanon, VA; brother-in-law: Thurman Rasnake, Staunton, VA; Also several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 6 pm Thursday, January 21, 2016 in the Copper Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Duane Musick and L.F. Valley officiating. LEBANON, VA- Dorothy (Dot) Counts, age 92, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2016 in Wellmont Hospice House.

Dot was born December 24, 1923 in Washington County, a daughter of the late David and Pauline Ogle Scott. She was the wife of the late Earl Cecil Counts, Jr. Dot was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters: Debbie Counts, Abingdon, VA; and Darla Miller and husband Bob, Bluff City, TN; granddaughter: Rebecca Moody, Hiltons, VA; great-granddaughter: Zori Moody, Hiltons, VA; and one sister: Doris Rutledge, Kingsport, TN.

James Allen (Al) Sword

LEBANON, VA-James Allen Sword, 70, passed away at his home Wednesday, January 13, 2016.

Al was born June 19, 1945, a son of the late James N. Sword and the late Ethel Sanders Sword. He worked 28 years for Clinchfield Coal Company and Eastover, and was member of the U.M.W.A.. Al could fix anything and a friend to all, he will be dearly missed. He loved his grandchildren, they were the light of his life.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers: Bobby Sword, Harry (Wig) Sword; and sister: Norma Sword.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years: Becky Sword; one son: Brian Sword and wife Keri, Wytheville, VA; two grandchildren: Fynlee Sword and Bowyn Sword, Wytheville, VA; one brother: Bill Sword and wife Margaret, Seattle, Washington; also several nieces and nephews survive.

LEBANON, VA- Carol Earlene Wood, age 62, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at her home.

Carol was born July 30, 1953, a daughter of the late Charlie A. Bussey and Madie Osborne Bussey.

Thomas Lee (Tom) Dickenson

CASTLEWOOD, VA- Thomas Lee (Tom) Dickenson, age 66, succumbed to cancer on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia, surrounded by his family.

Tom was born on December 4, 1949, to R.W. (Bob) and Blanche Sutherland Dickenson at their home in Castlewood, Virginia, where he remained a lifelong resident. He married the former Bette (Betsy) Ann Young of the Back Valley community of Cleveland, Virginia. In addition to maintaining the Virginia Century family farm, Tom was employed as a coal miner and carpenter. He was co-owner of Highlands Harvest Vineyard and Winery, and planted the second vineyard in Russell County in 1999. Tom was an avid fisherman who loved to spend time on the water with his friends. He was a devoted and fun husband and father. He had compassion for all living creatures. A steadfast liberal, Tom felt that government was important and should serve and support everyone. He was strongly dedicated to these beliefs and took every opportunity to share them at any given time. In his retirement, Tom loved nothing more than being with his grandchildren.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, R.W. (Bob) Dickenson and Blanche Sutherland Dickenson, nephew, Brett Waylon Jones, and father-in-law, H.E. (June) Young, Jr.

Survived by his wife of 44 years, Bette (Betsy) Dickenson; daughter, Julia Ann (Jan) Dickenson (Scott) Shipley, Ridgely, MD; daughter, Sarah Marie Dickenson, Castlewood, VA; granddaughter, Lillian (Lilli) Vada Rose Clark, Castlewood, VA; grandson, Joshua (Josh/JD) Dickenson Rudder, Castlewood, VA; brothers, Ronald (Ronnie) (Dina) Dickenson, Woodstock, GA; and John Dickenson, Kingsport, TN; sisters, Barbara (Bobbie) (Larry) Porter, Rogersville, TN and Connie Sue (Tim) Horne, Castlewood, VA; mother-in-law, Trula Smith Young, Lebanon, VA; brother-in-law, H.E. (Edward (Alicia) Young, III, Lebanon, VA; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 2 pm at St. Marks Episcopal Church, on the corner of Fifth Ave. and Broad St. in St. Paul, Virginia, with the Rev. Robert Beauchamp officiating. Janice was born September 17, 1950, a daughter of the late Ector and Oddie Patton Lee. She was of the Christian Faith.

AIKEN, SC- Sandra Honaker, age 73, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2016 in Johnson City Medical Center with her loving husband and family by her side.

Sandra was born July 5, 1942 in Davin, WVA, a daughter of the late Eules Meyers and Jewel Green. She was a retired employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Smyth County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Talatha Baptist Church in Aiken, SC. Sandy was the most loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and friend. She was generous in every way and made everyone she knew feel loved and important. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. Sandy’s sense of style and grace was one of her greatest virtues. She will be dearly missed.

In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her granddaughter: Haley Mitchell.

Woody was born September 24, 1955 in Russell County, a son of the late Wiley B. and Jewel Jessee Cantrell. He was employed as a Coal Handler of Appalachian Power, Clinch River Plant for 30 years and a member of I.B.E.W. Union and a past member of Cleveland Rescue Squad. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include the love of his life fiancé: Estella Linkous and daughter: Kerensa Seal, Cleveland, VA; one son: Jeromy Cantrell, Lebanon, VA; two sisters: Annette Leonard and companion: Donald Hash, Abingdon, VA; and Terese Zuber and husband Nicky, Glade Spring, VA; one brother: Wiley Cantrell, Jr. and wife Mona, Lebanon, VA; nephew: Clay Cantrell; niece: Alexis Cantrell; and special friend: Eddy Hall.
