Cecil A. Duty

LEBANON, VA- Cecil A. Duty, age 87, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Cecil was born November 14, 1928 in the Artrip section of Russell County, a son of the late Starling E. Duty and Dora Smith Duty and the husband of the late Ngaio Lee Hedrick Duty. He was a retired employee of Verizon in Pulaski, VA. for many years. Cecil was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Army Veteran.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three children: Diana, Alvin and Ronald Duty; and several siblings, nieces and nephews.

Survivors include one sister: Kate Duty Cole, Knoxville, TN; and one brother: Jimmy Duty, Cleveland, VA.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Friday, May 27, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Thomas Messick officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. The family will receive friends 1pm until 2 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

David Allen (Crockett) Robins

Cleveland VA- David Allen (Crockett) Robins, age 60, passed at his home Sunday May 22, 2016. Born July 17, 1955 in Lebanon, VA. the son of the late Fred and Viola Mays Robins, David was a 1973 graduate of Lebanon High School, he was employed as a lineman by Powercom in Washington state.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother: Freddie Robins.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years Debbie Lynn Morrison Robins, Two sisters: Catherine Dye and husband Gary, Spring City, and Dorothy Warren and husband Rodney of Abingdon, Two brothers: Neal Mays of Coeburn Va., and Ronald (Freddie) Robins of Lebanon. A special friend his feline Misty. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A special thank you to Mountain States Regional Cancer Center for the kindness shown to David and to Mountain States Hospice.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 am Tuesday May 24, 2016 in the West Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dewey Helbert officiating, those wishing to attend will need to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Monday May 23, 2016 at the funeral home.

Larry Lasley, Gary Lasley, Rickie Honaker, Mike Breeding, Justin Sayler and Dwayne Helbert will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Sword, and William Sword.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Wellmont Cancer Society, P.O.Box 246, Abingdon, Va. 24212.

Brenda Kaye Morrison

Lebanon, VA- Brenda Kaye Morrison, age 70, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 20, 2016 in Bristol Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Brenda was born November 16, 1945 in Lebanon, VA a daughter of the late John Buckles, Jr. and the late Cora Mae Combs Buckles, She attended Trinity Pentecostal Church in Lebanon.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son: Kerry Allen Henley

Survivors include three daughters: Beverly Henley of Abingdon, VA, Katrina Henley of Lebanon, VA, and Jenetta Henley of Dublin, VA, one son: Curtis Henley of Blountville, TN, Two sisters: Pat McReynolds and husband Jerry of Cleveland, and Nancy Jessee of Castlewood, and five grandchildren: Cagney Henley, Bethany Casey, Kayla Deel, Landon Henley, and Miranda Henley. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday May 22, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. David Robins officiating. Burial will be in the Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon at 11 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2016. Those wishing to attend should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Betty Jane Hayter Ferguson

LEBANON, Va.-Betty Jane Hayter Ferguson, age 76, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at her home with her family by her side.

Betty was born April 7, 1940 in Washington County the daughter of the late Ed and Ada Branson Hayter. She loved children and had a daycare in her home for many years. She attended Green Valley Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy Hayter and Luther Hayter.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Adron Ferguson; one daughter, Freda Jane Ferguson Musick and husband Michael; one son, Denny Adron Ferguson and wife Wanda, all of Lebanon. Four sisters, Peggy Salyers, Bonnie Woods, Jeanie Kestner all of Abingdon and Patsy Robinson, Bristol, Tn.; three brothers, Carl Hayter, Lebanon, Nelson Hayter, Abingdon and R.C. (Beaver) Hayter and wife Frances, Abingdon; six grandchildren, Chad Ferguson and wife Samantha, Dillon Ferguson, Jordan Musick, Makayla Ferguson, Maranda Ferguson and Justin Musick all of Lebanon; one great-grandchild, Brooklyn Ferguson, Lebanon; sisters-in-law, Gaynell Mitchell, Lebanon, Ema Jean Riley, Troutville, Va., Frances Ferguson, Marion, Va. and one brother-in-law, Buford Ferguson and wife Nancy, Lebanon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in Green Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Naff and Randy Williams officiating. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the service. Entombment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May, 18 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Those wishing to attend should meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chad Ferguson, Dillon Ferguson, Jordan Musick, Justin Musick, Mark Mitchell and Kevin Ferguson. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Musick.

Jimmy B. Akers

LEBANON, VA-Jimmy B. Akers, age 68, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2016 at his home.

Jimmy was born July 9, 1947 in Lebanon, the son of the late Stewart and Bess Barrett Akers. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company, Clinch River Plant with 37 years of service. He was a member of Mountain View Community Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Charles B. Williams and sister, Marion Lee Nipper.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Angela Vandessa Akers, two sons, Charles Brian Akers and Stewart Evan Akers, mother-in-law, Margie Williams and one sister, Gloria Savage. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 pm., Monday, May 16, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens. Those wishing to attend should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm prior to the service. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Ollie Mae Osborne

LEBANON, VA- Ollie Mae Osborne, age 98, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 13, 2016 in the Wexford House in Kingsport, Tn. She was born March 22, 1918 in Russell County, VA a daughter of the late William Osborne and Mollie Mays Stapleton. She was the wife of the late Claude Osborne. She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a graduate of Lebanon High School, she was the oldest member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a member of the ladies sewing circle. She was a cancer survivor of 31 years. She was preceded in death by a grandson, James Lee Osborne.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Osborne, Gate City, Va., Ralph Osborne, Lebanon and Donald Osborne and wife Barbara, Lebanon; three grandchildren, Deborah Stanley and husband Carter, Florida, Karen and Daisy Osborne, Kingsport, Tn. and Donald (Slick) Osborne and wife Nancy, Lebanon; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Osborne and fiancée Justin Fields, Lebanon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2016 in Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Cynthia Frye officiating. Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery in Weber City. The family will receive friends 1 until 2 pm prior to the service. Pallbearers Donald (Slick) Osborne, Jr., Raymond Stapleton, Bobby Coats, Andrew Hartsock, Herbie Bevins and Daniel Brommer.

Dorothy Young Rutherford

Lebanon –VA. Dorothy Young Rutherford, age 93, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 6, 2016. She was born April 5, 1923, a daughter of the late John and Ellen McMillan Young and the wife of the late Robert Lee Rutherford. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the RCMC Ladies Auxiliary, and a longtime volunteer at the Lebanon Christian Center. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother Marvin Young and three sisters: infant sister Gladys Young, Lena Boone and Leah Smith.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Fields and husband Woodrow, Bristol, VA., one son, Robert Rutherford and wife Brenda, Lebanon, VA.; one sister-in-law: Mary Nucci, Montpelier, VT.; one brother-in-law: Bruce Rutherford and wife Winnie, Cleveland, OH.; two grandsons Todd M. Lowdermilk and wife Samantha, Stafford, VA, John Robert Lowdermilk and wife Kathy, Bristol, TN., three great-grandchildren; Joshua Authenreath, Alvarado, VA, Isaac Lowdermilk, Bristol, TN, and Ada Jane Lowdermilk, Stafford, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A special thank you to the staff of Mountain View ARC for the care and love shown to Dorothy during her stay.

Funeral service will be conducted at 7 pm Monday, May 9, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Dr. Heath Kahlbau officiating. Burial will be in the Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, 11am Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Those wishing to attend should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm prior to the service. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Jack J. Taylor

LEBANON-Jack J. Taylor, age 78, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at his home.

A son of Jay Taylor and Minnie Taylor he was born June 6, 1937 a lifelong resident of Russell County. He was a retired employee of Consol Coal Company and a member of the U.M.W.A. He attended Mountain View Community Church. He was the husband of Tresa Fields Taylor who died February 11, 2016.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a daughter Pam White, a grandson Jacob Taylor and brother Don Taylor.

Survivors include two sons, Jackie Taylor and wife Tammy and Bryan Taylor and wife Sherry all of Lebanon; two sisters, Alma Whited, Honaker, Va., Linda Hess and husband Dallas, Honaker and one sister-in-law, Nancy Fields, Lebanon; two brothers, Jess Taylor and Danny (Dean) Taylor and wife Pat, Honaker; four grandsons, Aaron White, Ben White, Justin Taylor and Tommy Taylor; four great-grandchildren, Addison White, Asher White, Abram White and Jewel Edge. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with the Rev. Darrell Harmon officiating. Burial will be in the Taylor-Fields cemetery near the home at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016. Those wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. prior to the service. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Daisy Gibson Melton

LEBANON, VA- Daisy Gibson Melton, age 75, went to be with the Lord Monday, May 2, 2016 in the Russell County Medical Center.

Daisy was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Lester Melton; son: Randy Gibson; eight brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include one daughter: Mary Ann Gibson, Lebanon, VA; one son: Brandon Melton, Bristol, TN; two grandsons: Michael Huffman and Cole Moffitt; and several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 pm, Thursday, May 5, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with the Rev. Darrell Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery in Abingdon. The family will receive friends noon until 1 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
