CLEVELAND, VA- Cecil Dean Fields, age 75, went to be with the Lord Friday, January 23, 2015 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Cecil was born December 13, 1939 in Russell County a son of the late Beecher Fields and the late Malissa Fields. He was a retired employee of Hyster in Danville, IL with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of Mountain View Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife: Elise Mae Fields; son: Eddie Fields; son-in-law: Marty Harp

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Monday January 26, 2015 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Harmon officiating. Burial will be held in the Mt. Janet Lee Meade  

LEBANON, VA- Janet Lee Meade, 79, went to be with the Lord January 21, 2015, following a long illness.

Janet was born June 28, 1935 in Closplint, Kentucky a daughter of the late Roy Lee Sturgill and the late Beulah Freeman Sturgill. She had lived in Lebanon the past 50 years and was a member of Community Heights Church, in Richlands. Janet worked most of her life for the Russell County Head Start.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother: Rodney Sturgill; and a daughter: Penny Meade Murray.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years: Jerry L. Meade; one daughter: The Hon. Pamela Meade Sargent and husband Bill and Tiffany Murray, Lebanon; one son: Scott Thurston Meade and wife Karen and Danielle, Brandon and Madison, Mocksville, NC; one sister: Faye Lovett and husband Hubert, Copperas Cove, TX;

Ida Rose Conley

LEBANON-Ida Rose Conley, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon, VA surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 29, 1920, in Logan County, WV. She and her family moved to Lebanon, VA, in 1958 when her husband relocated following a job transfer to AEP at the Clinch River Plant. Mrs. Conley was a 1938 graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, WV; obtained her Kindergarten Certification from the University of Virginia; and continued her education by receiving her Master of Arts in Administration from East Tennessee State University in 1969. She was a beloved first grade teacher at Lebanon Elementary School from 1958 – 1972 and served as the Assistant Principal at Lebanon Elementary School from 1973 – 1984. Following her retirement she continued her love for education by serving as a Beginning Teacher (BTAP) evaluator for the Virginia Department of Education until 1990. In addition, she was an active member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church where she was choir member, Sunday school teacher, and advocate for the Holston Home for Children.

Ida Rose, better known as “Mamaw Conley,” was an avid gardener, bird watcher, and poet. Mrs. Conley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Arnold Julian (A. J.) Conley; daughter, Georgia Ann (Jo)  Conley Hanson; son, Otto Carl (Skip) Conley; parents, Andrew Jackson Thomas and Allie Faire Thomas, and four sisters and one brother. She is survived by: granddaughter, Virginia Lynn Leonard and husband, Joe, of Lebanon, VA; granddaughter, Mary Beth Gilbert and husband, Marty, of Lebanon, VA; grandson, Andrew Major Hanson and wife, Victoria, of Bristol, TN; one sister, Virginia Foch Thomas Dial of Lebanon, VA. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Ransom Alexander Leonard, Warrenton, VA; Jefferson Taylor Leonard, Richmond, VA; Julie Ellen Leonard, Tuscaloosa, AL; Nicholas Craig McGlothlin, Lebanon, VA; Sarah Cora Allison McGlothlin, Lebanon, VA; Maxwell Major Hanson, Bristol, TN; and Sidney Marie Hanson, Bristol, TN. Other survivors include: Frank Major and Cynthia Hanson of Abingdon, VA; Charlene Cooke Conley of Lebanon, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2 pm in the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Edwards officiating. Private burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 pm at the church. CLEVELAND, VA- Roy Robert Chaffin, age 78, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 18, 2015 in the Russell County Medical Center.

Roy was born May 22, 1936 in Dante, VA a son of the late Tyler Chaffin and the late Geneva Nunley Chaffin. He was a former employee of Arrington Trucking Company and was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: Sandra Chaffin; infant brother: Macel Eugene Chaffin; sister: Cynthia Swanson and brother-in-law: Don Swanson

Survivors include one son: Robert James (R.J.) Velva Kiser Breeding

LEBANON, VA- Velva Kiser Breeding, age 99, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in the Maple Grove Nursing Home in Lebanon.

Born May 29, 1915 in Clinchfield in Russell County a daughter of the late Frank Kiser and the late Fannie Puckett Kiser she was the wife of the late Cloid Breeding. She was a longtime member of Clinchfield Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by: two sisters and one brother.

Survivors include her daughters: Anna Claudine Parsons, Greensboro NC; and Lois Rasnake and husband Jimmie, Jonesborough, TN; three grandchildren: Kelly Parsons and wife Jamie, and Windy Parsons, all of Greensboro, NC; and Tracey Gallardo and husband Rene, Johnson City, TN; four great grandchildren: Skylar Parsons, Lincoln Parsons, Zachary Gallardo and Christopher Gallardo.

Billy Joe Huffman

Castlewood, VA- Billy Joe Huffman, age 78, went to be with the Lord Friday, January 2, 2015 in Johnson Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Billy Joe was born November 19, 1936, a son of the late William T. Huffman and the late Nora Castle Huffman. He was a 1955 graduate of Cleveland High School. He was a retired miner for Clinchfield Coal Corporation and a member of the U.M.W.A. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church and attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Paul Huffman and Dennis Huffman.

Survivors include wife of 56 years: Betty Hughes Huffman; two daughters: Tammy Vicars and husband Greg, Lebanon, VA; and Terri Bise, Castlewood, VA; one sister: Wilma Jean Blankenship and husband Jack, Cleveland, VA; four grandchildren: Robin Pyle, William Cody Bise, Colton T. Bise, Jessie L. Bise; special granddaughter: Brittany Vicars; several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was born May 20, 1925 in Russell County, he was a retired security guard and farmer.

LEBANON, VA- Robert Carrol (Lightning) Phillips, Sr., age 63, went to be with the Lord Sunday, December 28, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Robert was born December 24, 1951 at Clinchco, a son of the late Elbert Snead Phillips and the late Willa Mae Hall Phillips. He was a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company with 25 years of service and a member of the U.M.W.A. He was a member of the Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church and attended Green Valley Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson: Christian Shane Phillips; brothers: Albert Snead (June) Phillips, Jr.; Harry Wayne Phillips; son-in-law: Michael Emory Cross; father and mother-in-law: Carrol and Dixie Lythlin Cook.

Claude was born July 7, 1933 in Russell County a son of Earnest and Martha Massie Crabtree. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church. He was a disabled employee of Ingersoll Rand in Claypool Hill. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents Claude was preceded in death by son: Ronnie Crabtree; brother: Tansel Crabtree; sister: Geanette Rasnake.

Julie was born January 15, 1972 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the daughter of Keith and Drema Schwinn. She was a devoted mother, sister, daughter, aunt, grandmother, wife and a dedicated Packers fan.

LEBANON, VA – Lloyd Richard Rhea.80, went to be with the Lord Thursday, December 18, 2014 surrounded by his family.

Lloyd was born November 11, 1934 in Wilder in Russell County. He was a son of the late John D. Rhea and Mary Kiser Rhea. He as a retired mechanic with Russell Manufacturing in Lebanon with over 30 years of service. He was a member and deacon of Anchor Baptist Church. A veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Charles Richard Rhea and a brother Marvin Rhea, a sister Shirley McHale, and a son-in-law Phillip Davis.

ST.PAUL, VA- Lynda Kay Burroughs Sutherland, age 60, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014 following a long battle with cancer.

Lynda was born July 27, 1954, a daughter of the late O. Wendell Burroughs and the late Mary Dykes Burroughs. She lived most of her life in St. Paul and was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Paul.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother: Jeffery Wendell Burroughs.

Survivors include her husband of 24 years: Harry Sutherland; one daughter: Jeannine Keffer, Fincastle, VA; granddaughter who was the love of her life: Dani Keffer, Fincastle, VA; two sisters: Carla Burroughs Stone, Christiansburg, VA; and Peggy Burroughs Bellamy, St. Paul, VA; lifelong friend: Jo Mays, Bristol, VA; special friend who was like a daughter: Stacy Justice; two nieces and three nephews, 15 great-nieces and nephews; including Courtney Evans (her girl) and Brook Bellamy.

A special thanks to Dr. Suzanne Patton and staff, Infusion Center, Nurses and staff on 2 West, of the Bristol Regional Medical Center and the staff at the Hospice House.

The funeral service will be conducted 8 pm Tuesday, December 16, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Mike Moore and the Rev. Cuba Porter officiating. The family will receive friends 6 pm until 8 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be conducted 2 pm Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in the Temple Hill Memorial Gardens in Castlewood. Those attending are requested to meet at the cemetery. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620.

Opal Ferrell

BOONE, NC-Opal Ferrell, age 92, formerly of Lebanon, Va. passed away Monday, December 8, 2014.

Opal was born April 28, 1922 in Cheylan, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late George and Lizzie Ellis. She and her late husband Earl Ferrell moved to Lebanon, Va. in 1957 living here for 35 years. She was a member of Spring City Baptist Church for 50 years and a resident of Brian Estate (Senior Retirement Center) for the last nine years in Boone, NC. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her second husband James Crouch; her son Tom Ferrell and grandson Brian Ferrell.

Survivors include her son Bob Ferrell and wife Joy, Newland, NC; two grandsons: Tim Ferrell and wife Sherry, Concord, NC and Mark Ferrell and wife Teresa Johnson, Omaha, NB; two granddaughters: Angie Harmon and husband John, Crossnore, NC and Jane Clark and husband David, Cedar Bluff, Va.; 10 great-grandchildren: Cpl. Zac Hall and wife Megan, Camp Pendleton, CA; Katie Hall, Crossnore, NC; Bleu Harmon, Crossnore, NC; Rachel Harmon, Raleigh, NC; Michael Clark, Cedar Bluff, Va; Kristie Clark, Cedar Bluff, Va.; Heather Ferrell, Concord, NC; Aaron Ferrell, Concord, NC; Tiffany Ferrell, Concord, NC and Tim Taylor, Johnson City, TN; three great-great grandchildren and twin great-great grandchildren due in January; special friends: Margaret Moore, Matthews, NC and Barbara Kuhan, Boone, NC.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday, December 11, 2014 in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Lonnie Barnes and Pastor Nathan Brown officiating. Entombment will follow the service in the mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

    I am so sorry for your loss. As a mother I know exactly the hurt and pain you are feeling for I loss my son back in 2001. And if it wasn’t for the Lord’s help I would have never made it through this terrible ordeal. I pray that you lean on Jesus in this time of sorrow and let him help you through this. God is our refuge in our time of need. I pray God gives you all the strength that you need.Lord I ask you to help this family in their time of sorrow in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

    To Elane’s Family:
    I want to express my sadness at hearing of Elane’s passing.
    I am proud to say that Elane and I were sisters-in-law for many years. I always appreciated her for the way she would “tell it like it is”. You always knew where you stood with Elane, that was so refreshing. Althought it has been several years since I had seen Elane, I still thought the world of her and remember the good times that we shared back then. She was an intelligent, beautiful woman and an extremely proud mother. I am honored to have been her sister-in-law. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, Bret and Jacyln, she will be missed.

    Karen Robinson was my BFF for the last 14 yrs, she was such a great friend to everyone that she came into contact with. I miss her so much, she was more than a friend, she was my sister in heart. Love you Karen, but I know that we will see each other again in Heaven. Give my nephew, Dominic Hugh, a hug and kiss and tell him I love him from his Aunt.
