BRISTOL, VA- Peggie Varney, age 71, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 17, 2014 in Bristol Regional Medical Center with her daughter by her side.

Peggie was born November 29, 1942 in Dickenson County a daughter of the late Delmer F. Rasnick and the late Elizabeth Sutherland Rasnick. She was the wife of the late Kenneth H. Varney.

Survivors include one daughter: Lynn Varney, Bristol, TN; special friend: Rick Harmon, Abingdon, VA; four sisters: Patsy Gibson, Lebanon; Merie Labato, Lebanon; Charlene Rasnick. Bristol, VA; and Beatrice Oberle and husband Joe, Bristol, VA; two brothers: Dean Rasnick, Bristol, VA; and Reed Rasnick, of North Carolina; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted 3 pm Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rabbi Joe Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 1 pm until 3 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.

Brenda Carol Porter

CASTLEWOOD, VA-Brenda Carol Porter, age 57, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 18, 2014 at her home.

Carol was born May 13, 1956 in Russell County, a daughter of the late Billy and Joyce Rambo Jessee. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by paternal grandparents: Romey and Beulah Jessee; and maternal grandparents: Ed and Belle Rambo.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years: Bobby Paul Porter; three sisters: Mildred Porter and husband Dennis, Castlewood, VA; Dorothy Lawson and husband Carson, Castlewood, VA; and Cindy Pecotich and husband Mark, San Francisco, CA; two brothers: Larry Jessee and wife Marsha, Bland, VA; and Michael Jessee and wife Doris, Coeburn, VA; special little puppy: Buffy; special friends: Pearl Meade, Connie Stanley and Carolyn Dunn; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted 8 pm Sunday, April 20, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Harold Hawkins and the Rev. Elwood Hall officiating. Burial will be 11 am Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Porter Family Cemetery. Those attending are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 am to go in procession to the cemetery near the home. Betty Carolyn Jennings

CASTLEWOOD, VA-Betty Carolyn Jennings, age 64, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 11, 2014 in Johnson Memorial Hospital.

Betty was born March 7, 1950 in Russell County a daughter of Vernon Elam and the late Retha Kegley Elam. She was employed by Dublin Garment, Grassy Creek Plant for sixteen years.

In addition to her mother she was preceded in death by her son Harold Monroe Elam; two sisters: Wilma Davis and Sue Elam.

Survivors include her husband: Charles E. (Sweat Bee) Jennings; Three daughters: Darlene Thiel and husband Brian, Lebanon, Sandy Wolfe and friend Jeff Parkey, Gate City and Lisa Carpenter, Castlewood; her father: Vernon Elam, Lebanon; two sisters: Catherine Louise Skeens and husband William, Reba Ann Cook all of Lebanon; five grandchildren: Wesley Harrison, Robert Harrison, Lakota Wolfe, Timothy Wolfe and Jody Wolfe. Best friend Johnny Fields. Also several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 pm Monday, April 14, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Pastor Gary Crum, Bro. Larry Powers, Rev. Teddy Phillips and Bro Harold Shortridge officiating. The committal service and burial will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in the Grassy Creek Community Cemetery. Barbara Lou Lampkins

Survivors include husband of 61 years: Lilburn H. Lampkins; one daughter: Mary Poston, Abingdon, VA; two sons: Sammy Lampkins, Lebanon; and Lee Lampkins and wife Saundra, Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren: Jessica Thomas, Heather and Logan Lampkins; three great-grandchildren: Austin Bradley, Cara Thomas and Chloe Thomas; one sister: Mary Ellen Calton, Kingsport, TN; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

Luther (Gene) Mims

LEBANON, VA- Luther (Gene) Mims, age 72, went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 3, 2014.

   Gene was born July 3, 1941 in Tallahassee, FL a son of the late Wilbur Mims and the late Mary Allen Mims. He was a retired employee of Stebbins Engineering in New York. Gene was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Cedar Pointe Baptist Church, a member of the Lebanon V.F.W. Post #9864 and the American Legion Post # 209. Gene was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

   In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by son: Shannon Mims; and one brother: Charles Mims.

   Survivors include wife of 48 years: Ann Casey Mims; one son: Larry Eugene Mims and wife Lesley, Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren: Megan Thompson and husband Cody, Corey Mims, Ethan Hall and Logan Hall; four sisters: Linda Duval and husband Phil, Tallahassee, FL; Rita Taylor and husband Amos, Tallahassee, FL; Wilma Russell and husband John, Whigham, GA; and Lucille Powell and husband Woodrow, Donaldsonville, GA; four brothers: Buddy Mims and wife Barbara, James Mims and wife Jennett, and Noah Mims and wife Jannette, all of Tallahassee, FL; and Eddy Mims and wife Beth, Crawford, FL; sister-in-law: Julia Mims, Ochlocknee, GA; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

Gene T. Vencill

BELFAST, VA-Gene T. Vencill, age 91, a resident of the Belfast community went to be with the Lord Monday, March 31, 2014 in Abingdon Health and Rehab Center.

Born June 30, 1922 in Belfast in Russell County she was a daughter of the late Arleigh Vencill and the late Bess Marshall Vencill.  Gene was a member of Belfast United Methodist Church and a Sunday School adult class teacher for many years.  She lived in Roanoke for many years returning to the Belfast community in 1975 to care for her mother and sister.  Gene was a former President of the Belfast Senior Citizens for many years, and was a former board member of the Belfast-Rosedale Volunteer Fire Department.  She was a retired accountant for Cumberland Mountain Community Services.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister Mary Steele Vencill and two brothers: Herbert Vencill and Sam Vencill, Sr.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include a special sister-in-law: Mary Ellen Vencill, Belfast; nieces: Portia Munsey and husband Hampton, Greensboro, NC and Chris Helton and husband Ronnie, Belfast; nephews: Stephen Vencill, Bluefield, Va., Sam Vencill, Jr. and wife Carol, Johnny Vencill and wife Gail all of Belfast.  Several great nieces, nephews, great-great nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

The funeral service will be conducted 11 am Friday, April 4, 2014 in the Belfast United Methodist Church with Rev. Bradley Scott and Rev. Jason Crandall officiating.  Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 pm, Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the Belfast United Methodist Church.   Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.

James was born June 9, 1957 in Lebanon, a son of the late James Russell Fields and the late George Ann Harrison Fields. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School and a former employee of English Construction. He was a member of the Old Log Church, Mendota, VA.

Survivors include daughter: Jaime Wiseman and fiancé Michael Gibson, Castlewood; two sons: Steven Fields and fiancée Rachel Nickles, Lebanon; and Joseph Fields and wife Chelsey, Castlewood; five grandchildren: Taylor Gibson, Shane Fields, Austin Fields, Kaleigh Wiseman and Nickolas Fields; fiancée: Annette Hughes, Lebanon; and her children: Jessica Campbell and Brooke Kiser; two brothers: Billy Fields and wife Wanda, Lebanon; and George Fields and wife Sharon; nieces and nephews: Christopher Fields, B.J. (Hopper) Fields, Brooke Harris and Mandi Cruz;

Peggy J. Adams

CRESTVIEW, FL-Peggy J. Adams, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2014.  She was the daughter of the late Claude B. and Jessie C. Jessee.  She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil Adams, Jr. and her brother Robert Jessee.

She is survived by her two sons, Victor C. Arrington and wife Dimple of Fort Walton Beach, Fl., and David Bryan Adams and wife Sandy of Ashland, Ky.; two granddaughters: Brooke Pickett and Valerie Hill and three great-grandchildren: Chelsea Alley, Ryan Griffith and Abbi Cordle all of Ashland, Ky.; sister-in-law: Betty Jessee and nephew Allen Jessee and wife Vickie of Richmond, Va. and her beloved Boston Terrier Lew Two.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm, Friday, March 28, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with the Rev. Stephen Musick officiating.  Entombment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum in Castlewood.  Visitation will be from 12 until 2 pm Friday, March 28, 2014.  Pallbearers will be Vic Arrington, Bryan Adams, Leo Sawyers, R.L. Wallen, Richard Barker, John Arrington, and David Hollins.

Born May 3, 1930 in Lebanon, she was a daughter of the late Bernard and Clyde Elizabeth Robinson Gibson.  She was the wife of the late Robert C. Fanis.  She attended Copper Ridge Baptist church.  She was also preceded in death by one brother: Teddy Gibson, three sisters:  Margaret McFarland, Lorene Duty and Linda Wyrick.

Survivors include two daughters: Barbara Jean (Sue) Burke and husband Bob and Debbie Fanis all of Lebanon; five sisters: Mary Candler, Roanoke, Va., Rachel Skidmore and husband Troy, Nashville, Tn.; Betty Garrett, Faye Sanders, Shirley McFarlane all of Lebanon; two brothers: Dean Gibson and Giles Gibson and wife Barbara, all of Lebanon; two grandchildren: Chad Burke and wife Jessie, Damascus, Va.; Kelly Burke Pritchard and husband Clint, Bristol Va.; three step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 pm Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with the Rev. Evan Joshua Deel

KINGSPORT, TN- Evan Joshua Deel, age 31, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Holston Valley Medical Center with his loving wife Rachael and his mom by his side.

Evan loved life and his family, friends, motorcycles, guns/knives, driving, fishing, music and the beach. He enjoyed laughing and making others laugh continuously.

Evan was a graduate of Virginia Highlands Community College. He worked as a commercial refrigeration specialist in Boynton Beach, FL. He was very skilled at everything he did.

Evan was preceded in death by his father: Rick Deel; sister: Raina Deel; father-in-law: Ray Hubmann; two uncles: Daniel and Damon Compton.

Survivors include his wife: Rachael; daughter: Ashlyn; mother: Phyllis and stepfather: Hal Fisher; brother: Justin Deel; paternal grandmother: Ivel Fletcher; cousins: Matthew and Vanessa Compton; Also several brothers and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service will be conducted at 4 pm Thursday, March 20, 2014 in the Combs Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Sterrett officiating. Honoring Evans wishes there will be no graveside service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

    I am so sorry for your loss. As a mother I know exactly the hurt and pain you are feeling for I loss my son back in 2001. And if it wasn’t for the Lord’s help I would have never made it through this terrible ordeal. I pray that you lean on Jesus in this time of sorrow and let him help you through this. God is our refuge in our time of need. I pray God gives you all the strength that you need.Lord I ask you to help this family in their time of sorrow in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

    To Elane’s Family:
    I want to express my sadness at hearing of Elane’s passing.
    I am proud to say that Elane and I were sisters-in-law for many years. I always appreciated her for the way she would “tell it like it is”. You always knew where you stood with Elane, that was so refreshing. Althought it has been several years since I had seen Elane, I still thought the world of her and remember the good times that we shared back then. She was an intelligent, beautiful woman and an extremely proud mother. I am honored to have been her sister-in-law. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, Bret and Jacyln, she will be missed.

    Karen Robinson was my BFF for the last 14 yrs, she was such a great friend to everyone that she came into contact with. I miss her so much, she was more than a friend, she was my sister in heart.
