Nancy “Kay” Hale

LEBANON- Nancy “Kay” Hale, age 59, passed away July 20, 2017 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Bascom and Alice Wallace Clark of Lebanon, VA.

She was preceded in death by a sister: Jean Clark Nunley.

Survivors include two daughters: Jessica Hale of Atlanta, GA and Amanda Hale of Mechanicsville, VA; One sister: Judy Clark Crowder of Lebanon, VA. Five brothers: Carol Clark and wife Ruth Ann of Lebanon, VA; Sammy Clark and wife Jean of Lebanon, VA; Danny Clark and wife Glenna of Honaker, VA; Greg Clark and Lorri of Cleveland, VA and Pat Clark and wife Terri of Grundy, VA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside service will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, Virginia with the Rev. Don Bush officiating.

Donald K. Scales

LEBANON, VA- Donald K. Scales, age 67, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2017 in Maple Grove Health Center. Born March 12, 1950 in Roanoke, a son of the late Olbert and Violet Haynes Scales. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power, Clinch River Plant with 33 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Martha Scales, who raised Donald and maternal grandmother Rev Verlie Haynes.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Brenda Thompson Scales; two sons: 1st Lt. Donald S. Scales, Columbia, SC, and Deputy/SRO Douglas S. Scales and wife Jill of Lebanon, VA; and one daughter: Angela Scales Lyons and husband US Navy Commander Shelton Lyons, II, of Lithia, FLA; two brothers; Russell Scales and companion Teresa Jewell of Sparta, Ill; and Douglas K. Scales and wife Lena of Virginia Beach, VA; one uncle Malcom and wife of Crestview, Fla: two aunts; Lana and husband Wayne Daggs; and Sarah Young and husband Mike all of Bristol TN; three grandchildren: Shelton Lamar, Morghan, and Savannah. Also, a host of nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to employees and owners of Highlands Ambulance Service; Dr. Ernest Henry and Dr. Charlotte Ann Townsend, Lebanon Dialysis Center, the staff of Maple Grove Healthcare and Brenda Jessee formerly of C-Health.

The cryptside service will be Sunday, July 16, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Rev. George Jessee officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 pm prior to the service at the mausoleum.

Rodney Allen Baldwin

GLADE SPRING, VA – Rodney Allen Baldwin, age 44, entered his heavenly home in VCU Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was the son of Roger Baldwin and Geneva Lasley Baldwin. He was a farmer.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Regina Proulex and Laura Shortt.

Survivors include two daughters: Heather Baldwin of Abingdon, VA, and Shyanna Baldwin of Bristol, TN; Two sons: Dalton Baldwin, and Jeremiah Baldwin of Bristol, TN; two sisters: Dianne Salyer and husband Darrell of Abingdon, VA and Juanita Jackson of Abingdon, VA; one brother: Brent Baldwin of Abingdon, VA.; Rodney’s girlfriend: Renee White of Glade Spring, VA.; and one grandson: Colton Jackson of Bristol, TN.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday, July 14, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Rev Mitch Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm prior to service.

Wilma L. McCracken

GLADE SPRING, VA- Wilma L. McCracken, age 41, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 9, 2017.

Born May 26, 1976 daughter of the late Everette F. Couch and Ruby Johnson Couch. A native of Cleveland, she had lived in Glade Spring, VA for the past thirteen years. She was employed at Commonwealth Senior Living as a care giver. She was a member of Ivy Ridge Chapel in Cleveland, VA.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister: Eva Jean Musick; and one brother: Douglas Johnson, Sr.

Survivors include her husband of thirteen years: Mark H. McCracken, Sr. of Glade Spring, VA; one step-daughter: Ashleigh McCracken of Bristol, TN; two sons: David Allen Cannon, Jr. and fiancé Carolina Sword,and Michael Everette McCracken both of Glade Spring, VA; one step-son: Mark H. McCracken, Jr. of Bristol, TN; her mother: Ruby Johnson Couch of Cleveland, VA; three sisters: Betty Ball and husband Tim of Glade Spring, VA, Beulah Heath and husband Jeffery of Chilhowie, VA, and Connie Barton and husband Kenny of Cleveland, VA; three brothers: Billy Troy Johnson of Cleveland, VA, Bobby Musick and wife Kay of Fredricksburg, VA; and Stanley (Buck) Couch of Marion, VA; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Madge Milton Lucas

Lebanon, VA- Helen Madge Milton Lucas, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Hummingbird Retirement Home in Lebanon, VA. She was born October 30, 1922 in Carterton, VA.

She preceded in death by her husband Patrick Blaine Lucas, her parents, James Harvey Milton, Sr., and Nannie Elizabeth Cross Milton; her sister, Glenna Milton Taylor; brother, James Harvey Milton, Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth (Betsy) Lucas; Helen Fields and husband Jeff; four grandchildren, Matthew Kegley, Michael Kegley, Rachel McGhee Giles, and Jessica Kegley.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 2 pm at Word of Victory Church. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to AMI kids in Lebanon, VA.

Elmer Lee Johnson

CASTLEWOOD, VA- Elmer Lee Johnson, age 87, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017.

Elmer was born March 6, 1930 in Russell County a son of the late Nat Johnson and the late Pearl Austin Johnson. He was a farmer and cattleman, he attended Molls Creek Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters: Lorraine Johnson, Mary Johnson, and Irene Johnson; three brothers: James Johnson, Stanford Johnson, Billy Johnson; sister-in-law: Lucilla Johnson; and brother-in-law: Donald Salyer.

Elmer is survived by three sisters: Marie Salyer, Elaine Helbert and husband Marvin, and Sandra Dorton and husband Russell; two brothers: Ramond (Tena) Johnson; and Marvin Johnson and wife Sarah; two sisters-in-law: Martha Johnson, and Mary Johnson; also several nieces, nephews, an extended family: Darius Salyer, Sam Salyer, Gene Salyer, Dolan Salyer, and Mary Jessee; and a host of friends survive.

Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2017 at Molls Creek Church Castlewood, VA with the Rev. Douglas Trent, Rev. Arvil Dingus, and Rev. Howard Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Johnson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Molls Creek Church after 6 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2017.

Pallbearers will be: Anthony Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Gregory Johnson, Shane Salyer, and Brandon Helbert. Honorary pallbearers will be: Bill Hurd, Wilkey Hurd, Guy Jessee, Mike Jessee, Arnold Mullins, Eylie Ring, and Marvin Austin.

Bonnie Musick Jessee

CLEVELAND, VA- Bonnie Musick Jessee, age 86, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 25, 2017 with her family by her side.

Bonnie was born January 27, 1931 a daughter of the late Alexander and the late Sylvia Taylor Musick. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: James (Jim) Jessee; brothers: Monroe, Kenneth, Bufford, Glen, Ronald, and Hubert Ray Musick; sisters: Nadene and Christine Musick; sister-in-law: Annette Musick; all of Cleveland.

Bonnie is survived by her son: Wesley Jessee and wife Gina: daughter: Janet Collins and husband Ben; brother: Donald Musick; granddaughters: Tia Crawford and husband Gary, Kaitlyn Hall and husband Brent, Kacie Brown and husband Seth, and McKinna Collins; grandsons: Jake Chumbley and wife Jennifer, and Chazz Jessee; great-grandchildren: Morgan and Megan Chumbley, Abigail and Valerie Kansas Crawford; nieces: Teresa Davis and husband Larry, and Regina Thompson.

The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Ketron Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Duane Musick officiating. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery.

Ellis Huffman  

LEBANON, VA- Ellis Huffman, age 70, made the transition to his heavenly home, Tuesday June 20, 2017 peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. Ellis was a lifelong resident of Russell County, he was a son of the late Harry and Mary Clark Huffman. He was a retired construction company owner and owner of Huffman Tire. Ellis was a U.S. Army Veteran.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his five brothers: Ralph, Leonard, Harvey, Carroll, and Paul Huffman.

Ellis is survived by his wife of 6 years: Cathern Huffman; two daughters: Pam and husband Winston Johnson, Kimberly and husband John Ratliff; one stepdaughter: Haleigh Nichols; one son: Hunter Huffman; two sisters: Lois and husband Ken Morrison, and Joyce Warner; one brother Buster and wife Betty Clark; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Jim Pratt officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2017 at Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon, VA. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession. Sally Margaret Johnson Coleman

LEBANON, VA- Sally Margaret Johnson Coleman, age 92, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

Sally was born October 11, 1924 in Pike County, KY to the late Sebe and Katie Martin Johnson. In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Coleman and her three children: Dean Coleman, Shelby Compton, and Albert Coleman; Grandson: Shane Coleman.

Sally is survived by her sister: Betty Johnson and husband Clayton of Gallatin, TN; her brothers: L.D. Johnson of Knoxville, TN, V.H. Johnson and wife Edith of Pikeville, KY, Gary Johnson and wife Linda of Bean Station, TN, Daughters-in-law: Carol Coleman and Patsy Coleman of Lebanon, VA; Son-in-law: Ronnie Compton of Gaithersburg, MD; Grandchildren: Tammy Olson and husband Rick, Ryan Coleman and wife Greta; Michael Coleman and wife Tina; Jessica Roddy and friend Brian Bellamy, Tiffany Coleman and fiancé Richard Ratliff, Rhonda Forney and husband Kyle, Cindy Silva and husband Tony, Kimberly Bishop and husband Todd, Angela Ricketts and husband Mike; great-grandchildren: Nicki Musick and husband Brandon, Joshua Schlichting, Grayson Olson, Courtney Olson, Chance Caudill, Whitley Ball, Dalton Coleman, Briona Coleman, Kaitlyn Forney, Riley Forney, Isabella Silva, Brynn Silva, Zara Usman, Tiffany Bishop and Lena Ricketts as well as seven other precious great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren: Keaton Daughtery, Aniah Rowe and Logan Rowe; special nephew George Coleman and wife Sandy of Jackson, OH as well as several other precious nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 pm Saturday, June 24, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Rick Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:30 pm Friday, June 23, 2017 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be members of the Lebanon Town Police Department.

Sally was a very loving lady who loved her God, her family and her friends with passion. She was loved by all who knew her and was known as ‘Gran” to most everyone. She was of the Baptist faith and had attended Green Valley Baptist Church.

Mrs. Anna H. Boggs

ABINGDON, VA-Anna Hampton Boggs, age 89, died peacefully at home in Abingdon, Virginia, on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in the loving care of her daughters. Preceding her in death was her husband of 50 years, Charles Wesley Boggs Jr.; and two grandsons, Stephen Race Rudder and Joshua Reason Rudder.

Anna was born on April 11, 1928, in Lookout, Kentucky, to Sanford Hampton and Mollie Baldridge Hampton; she was the youngest of their 13 children. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death. She remained especially close to and cherished her nieces, Juanita Waller of Winter Garden, Florida, and Frances “Cookie” Henson, Huntington West Virginia.

Anna is survived by her daughters, Carol Joyce Boggs Rudder and Patricia Lynn Boggs, both of Abingdon; and two sons, Charles Wesley Boggs III and his wife, Connie Boggs, Wellington, Florida; and Ronald Jay Boggs and his wife, Tina Boggs, Monroe, North Carolina. Also surviving are six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Most of Anna’s life was spent in West Virginia, but in 1961 she and her husband moved the family to Cleveland, Virginia where she was a hairdresser for many years. She tried to instill in her children the motivation to work toward an education, and she expected the best from each of them. Moving to Abingdon after the death of her husband, Anna continued to be involved in the Ladies of the Moose. She loved playing Bingo and gambling. Known as Granny by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Anna spent countless hours on their special quilts, pajamas, and other personal keepsakes. Her sharp wit and intuitive insight into people made her a friend to many.

The family extends its gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Mark Handy, to the nurses, aides, and administrators of HNC Hospice for their caring and selfless attention to Anna during her illness and a heartfelt thank you to Rose Nokes, R.N. who took especially tender care of Anna.

Services will be held at 1 pm Friday, June 23, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel in Lebanon with Rev. Stephen Lester officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until 1 pm prior to the service. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Bernard E. Meade

LEBANON, VA- Bernard E. Meade, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 16, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Bernard was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church where he served as a former Sunday school teacher and was an ordained Deacon. He was instrumental in starting the Community Heights Baptist Mission at Wardell, VA in 1982, now called Community Heights Church. Bernard was born January 14, 1937 in Castlewood, VA a son of the late Gilbert Meade and Margaret Bevins Meade. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Norris Gene Meade.

Bernard graduated from Castlewood High School in 1955 and worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for a total of 35 years, the last 30 years as a Construction Inspector. After retiring in 1991 he worked twenty additional years for Schwartz and Associates Consulting Engineers, Thompson & Litton Consulting Engineers, and other consulting engineering firms.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years: Alice Dean Meade of the home; two daughters: Dr. Teresa Meade Crenshaw and her husband Sherrill of Glen Allen, VA.; Lisa Meade Suvada and her husband Brad of Ocala, FL; one grandson: John Meade Crenshaw and one granddaughter: Madeline Reed Crenshaw of Glen Allen, VA; and one brother: Fred W. Meade and wife Jimmy Gay of Castlewood, VA.

The funeral service will be conducted at Lebanon Baptist Church on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Heath Kahlbau and Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. prior to the service at 7:00 P.M. Committal service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon, VA. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 A.M. to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lebanon Baptist Church, P.O. Jaslynn Nichole Annaston Dodson

BRISTOL, VA- Jaslynn Nichole Annaston Dodson, 2 months old, went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 10, 2017 at home.   Jaslynn was born in Bristol, TN April 5, 2017, a daughter of John and Angela Dodson.

She was preceded in death by her cousins: Chelsea and Hannah Compton

In addition to her parents Jaslynn is survived by her great-grandparents: Jack Dodson and Bonnie Dodson; paternal grandparents: Mark and Linda Dodson, Donna Dodson and Pamela Ditto; maternal grandmother: Jennifer Cline; maternal great-grandparents: Roger and Debbie Compton; uncles and aunts: Maranda, Paul and Shawn Cline, Michele Dodson, Harry Condo, Jimmy, Danny; and several great uncles, aunts, and cousins.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11am Thursday, June 15, 2017 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Brother Tom Capron and Rev. Randy Cross officiating. Interment will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the funeral home.
