LEBANON, VA- Barbara Jean Collins, age 68, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at her home.

Barbara was born March 30, 1948 a daughter of the late James Webb and Eleyn Vandyke Webb.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters: Katherine Webber, and Later Webb: two brothers: Bill Webb and Steve Webb; brother-in-law: Ray Hampton;

Survivors include his fiancé: Richard Oglebey; one daughter: Victoria Martin and Ray, Front Royal, VA; three sons: Leonard Baker and Vickie, Thomasville, NC; Kelvin Baker and Lillian, Raysal, WV; and Stuart Baker and Remona; Raysal, WV; one sister: Christine Hampton, Lebanon, VA; 10 grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7pm Sunday, July 31, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends 5 pm until 7 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be conducted at 1 pm in the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Bluewell, WV. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery.

Ralph Snead

LEBANON, VIRGINIA- Ralph Snead, age 93, an active citizen and long-time businessman, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, W.D. and Mary Plaster Snead; a daughter-in-law, A. Lynn Snead; two grandsons, Mark Thomas Snead and Casey Aaron Snead; sister, Ruth Snead Garrett and husband J.G.; brother James Snead; a brother-in-law, Linton Dawson, special friend Harold Jessee, and a special nephew, Dan Hurt.

Ralph is survived by his loving wife of almost 66 years, Myrtle Harman Snead; two sons, Thomas H. Snead and Ralph D. Snead; Grandchildren Elizabeth L. Snead-Combs and husband Jamie, Missy Hall and husband David, Blake M. Snead, Matthew E. Snead and wife DeAnna; seven great-grandchildren; Two sisters, Mary Lou Snead-Dawson, Shirley Snead-Griffith and husband A.G. “Junior” Griffith; sisters-in-law Junella Snead and Callie Moser, many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Special friends include Steve Quillen, Teresa Gilmer, Phillip Puckett, Jessica Pruitt, Bobbi Addington, Bob and Diane Tomlinson, Roger Taylor and Louise Weaver.

Ralph served as a first class Petty Officer in the United States Navy during World War II stationed in the Philippines, and, upon returning to Russell County, worked as a truck driver and banker prior to entering the insurance business in 1950 and receiving a law degree from La Salle University. He was a partner in Smith & Company Insurance, which merged to create Lebanon Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1960. He was a charter member of the Lebanon Jaycees, a member and Deacon of the Lebanon Baptist Church, served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV), on the Russell County Board of Supervisors Budget Committee, Tax Equalization Board, as Treasurer of the Russell County Fair Association and was a member of the Town of Lebanon Planning Commission for 25 years. An experienced Court-appointed executor of estates, he was also a published author, penning a book, “Memories, Stories and Recollections of a Rural Estate Executor and Administrator” as well as multiple articles in the Lebanon News.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 pm Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the Lebanon Baptist Church with Dr. Heath Kahlbau and the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:30 pm until 7:30 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. in Russell Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Alan Moor officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Lebanon V.F.W. Post #9864. Those wishing to attend should meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Ralph Snead Memorial Fund to be used for cancer research, P.O. Box 399, Lebanon, VA 24266.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be Steve Quillen, Bob Tomlinson, Dr. Buster Johnson, Phillip Puckett, Matthew Snead, Haze Clark, Jr., Mike Altizer, Larry Rasnake and Jamie Combs. Honorary pallbearers will be Blake Michael Snead and the Bob Tomlinson Sunday School class.

Joe Leon Fields

LEBANON, VA- Joe Leon Fields, age 85, went to be with Jesus Monday, July 11, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Joe was born October 1, 1930 in Dunbar, VA to the late Leon and Lou Farmer Fields, spending most of his life in Russell County. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School, a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army and was employed by C&P Telephone Company for 40 years, where he retired as Regional Central Office Supervisor. As a long standing member of the Green Valley Baptist Church, Joe was a Sunday school teacher, treasurer and deacon. He was a member of the Russell County Chapter of The Gideons, a founding member of the Pioneer Boosters Club, and the Lake Bonaventure Country Club where he loved to play golf with his three sons. Joe was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings: Jack Fields and Bea Puckett.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years: Ruth Pendleton; adoring daughter: Beth Henry, Lebanon, VA; loving sons: Joe Timothy Fields, John Pendleton Fields and wife Lisa, and Thad Jamison Fields and wife Deirdre Gilmer Fields; three sisters: Lillian Jessee, Brenda Fuller and husband William, and Tammy Gibson and husband Johnny; a special daughter: Carole Fitzsimmons; 11 grandchildren: Reece and wife Rebecca and Cheri Henry, Joseph, Tyler, Charles, Ryan, Amber, and Heather Fields, Stephen, Jack and Alison Tzianabos; 1 great-granddaughter: Mia Grace Henry; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

Clyde Barton Ferguson

LEBANON, VA – Clyde Barton Ferguson, age 86, went to be with The Lord, Friday July 8, 2016 at his home.

Clyde was born in Russell County the son of the late Charles William and Morrell Snead Ferguson. He was a lifelong farmer and a member of The Lebanon Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by one son: Donald (Foxie) Ferguson, one sister: Elizabeth Ann Jackson; a special granddaughter: Rosa Ferguson Marshall.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Edna Helton Ferguson; four daughters: Deborah Francisco and husband Roger, Mary Jean Franklin and husband David, Diana Collins and husband Cecil, and Lisa Barney and husband Jason; one daughter-in-law: Teresa Ferguson; one sister; Virginia Ferguson; four grandchildren: Jessica Hicks and husband Kevin, Vegas Ferguson and wife Melissa, Cody Francisco, and Nicki Collins; five great-grandchildren: Haleigh and Caleb Hicks, Hayden and Kylee Ferguson, and Aliya McBride; also several nieces and nephews.

Velma Catherine Smith

LEBANON, VA- Velma Catherine Smith, age 73, passed away at her home on Friday, July 8, 2016 after a long battle with cancer.

Catherine was born in Russell County, VA, the only child of the late Edna Sword Robinson and John Patton Robinson. She was of the Baptist faith and had attended Green Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years: Billy Joe Smith; five children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson and several cousins. Daughters: Sylvia Anita Anderson and husband Jim; and Angela Kaye Smith, both of Lebanon, VA; sons: Ronald Keith Smith and wife Eileen, Bel Air, Maryland; Randall Scott Smith, Glade Springs, VA; and Richard Lynn Smith and wife Christina, Kingsport, TN; grandchildren: Emily and Adam Smith, Eric and Katie Anderson, Kelly and Matthew Smith, Hailey and John Patton Smith; great-grandson: Hudson Smith; two special aunts: Louise Robinson Hawkins, Lebanon, VA; and Peggy Sword Jackson, Gate City, VA.

Estella Graham Elliott

LEBANON, VA- Estella Graham Elliott, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at her home.

Estella was born in Lebanon, a daughter of the late Walter Gray Helton and Nannie McCloud Helton. She was a long time member of Lebanon Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her 1st husband: Warren Graham and 2nd husband: Dr. Walter C. Elliott; sisters: Leada Scyphers, Victoria Wesley, Elizabeth G. Breeding; brothers: Ishmael, Helton and Orville Helton.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 pm Sunday July 10, 2016 in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon with Dr. Heath Kahlbau officiating. Burial will follow after the service. CLEVELAND, VA- Clair Musick, age 84, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at his home.

Clair was born December 3, 1931 in Russell County, a son of the late Aaron and Lilly Nicewonder Musick and was the husband of the late Nadine Musick. He was a retired truck driver and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son: Virgil Musick; two sisters: Mallie Musick and Inis Kiser; five brothers: Stacey Musick, Burchard Musick, Dewey Everett and Elijah Tiller; and granddaughter: Jeanie Kennedy.

Survivors include one daughter: Linda Sue Buckles, Lebanon, VA; three sons: Eugene Musick, Cleveland, VA; Allen Johnson, Bristol, TN; and Lynn Johnson, Bristol, TN; one sister: Madline Boothe, Roanoke, VA; one brother: Kermit Musick, Cleveland, VA; six grandchildren: Renee Combs, Jason Musick, Justin Musick, Tia Artrip, Cody Johnson and Dace Johnson; two great-grandchildren: Ashley Buckles and Tabitha Buckles; two great-great-grandchildren: Caileigh Ball and Jayle Artrip; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

Charles was born February 20, 1944 in Benham, KY, a son of the late Ester Lee and Thelma Jane Griffin Sides.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister: LinaLee Lane and one brother: Donald Wayne Sides.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years: Elizabeth Jane Sides, Lebanon, VA; two daughters: Dawnella Weaver and husband Steve, FT Pierce, FL; and Christina De Rouin and husband Glenn, Murfreesboro, TN; one son: Charles Anthony Sides and wife Pamela Sue, Sanford, NC; two sisters: Rosemary Pittman and husband Rick, Paducah, KY; and Martha Chapman and husband Roger; one brother: Thomas Sides and wife Kathy, Paducah, KY; 5 grandchildren:, 4 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

Truman D. Combs

MANASSAS, VA-Truman D. Combs born to Howard and Hazel Cook of May 8, 1945 passed away at Prince William Hospital on July 3, 2016 at the age of 71.    Mr. Combs was a Vietnam Veteran and a retired employee of Prince William County after working for the county for 35 years.    Mr. Combs is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Hazel Combs; his wife Elizabeth Sue Combs; his brothers Roy Leon Combs, Harold Dello Combs and James Buster Combs and his sister Eula May Combs and Francis Hicks.    Surviving family members include four brothers and two sisters, Walter Combs and Wife Gaylene of Galax, VA, Lewis Combs and wife Nell of Newport News, VA, Willie Combs and wife Clarice of Manassas, VA, Randall Combs and wife Lois of Lebanon, VA, Arlen Combs of Manassas, VA, Linda Dotson and husband Claude of Abingdon, VA and Maralee Elswick of Abingdon, VA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.    Visitation will take place at 6-8 pm Thursday, July 7, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel. Graveside service will be conducted at 11 am Friday, July 8, 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon, VA. Cora Lee Wallace Virag

CLEVELAND, VA- Cora Lee Wallace Virag, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the home of her nephew.

Cora was born October 4, 1937 a daughter of the late Beverly and Maxie Dotson Wallace. She spent over 50 years in Baltimore Maryland, after retirement she and her late husband Carl Michael Virag returned to Russell County.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her sister: Clemons Ruth Sykes.

Survivors include her special nephew: Barry and his wife Karen Sykes, Abingdon, VA; nephew: Thomas W. Sykes, Bristol, TN; two nieces: Deborah Churchill, Charlotte, NC; and Sandra Sykes, Lebanon, VA; special friends: James and Kim King, Bristol, VA; her tea cup baby: Ayden King; Bristol, VA; and Eddie and Lisa Puckett, Mt Airy, MD; Also several other nieces and nephews survive.

Frances was born June 7, 1943 in Russell County, VA, the daughter of the late Howard and Hazel Cook Combs.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: David H. Hick; three brothers: Roy Leon Combs, Harold D. Combs and James B. Combs; and one sister: Eula Mae Combs.

Shirley Ann Addison

LEBANON, VA- Shirley Ann Addison, age 76, was called home with her Lord, on June 5, 2016 at her home.

Shirley was born July 3, 1939, a daughter of the late Bessie and Roy Jordan. She was a loving caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved being and working outdoors and making quilts. Shirley was a former employee of Lebanon Apparel Corporation, for more than 20 years and enjoyed working at the Shell Store and the Family Bluegrass Barn in Hansonville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Bernard (Shot) Addison; daughter: Lorie Osborne; mother and father-in-law: Elsie and Hugh Addison; brothers: Bill, Raymond and wife Jean, and Maynard Jordan; brothers-in-law: Bill, Jack and Jimmy Addison.

Fred Dale (Freddie) Robinson  

LEBANON, VA-Fred Dale (Freddie) Robinson, age 81, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 3, 2016 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Freddie was born March 1, 1935 in Lebanon, a son of the late Charles W. Robinson and the late Myrtle Houchins Robinson. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Carbo Community Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters: Helen Hensley, Christine Robinson and Irene Osborne; eight brothers: Howard, Robert, James, Herman, Lacy, Gene, Jessee and Jack Robinson.

Nadine Stevens

DANTE, VA-Nadine Stevens, age 75, went to be with the Lord Monday, May 30, 2016 in Johnston Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.

Nadine was born February 4, 1941 in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Carson and Lucy Wilson Harris and the wife of the late Johnny Junior Stevens. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three daughters: Bonnie Reynolds, Connie Marshall and Barbara Gamble; two sons: Terry Stevens and Danny Stevens; two grandchildren: Janet Marie Harris and Bobby Joe Horton; one brother: Bert Lee Harris and one great-grandchild: Michael Barton.

Survivors include three daughters: Norma Jean Stevens, Abingdon, VA; Brenda Stevens, Dante, VA; and Wanda Cassell and husband Michael Cassell, Dante, VA; three sisters: Arlene Musick, Vernie Wilson, both of Council, VA; and Zola Harris and husband Lawerency, Hansonville, VA; five brothers: Roy and wife Harriet Harris, Bee, VA; Clyde and Juanita Harris, Harless and Linda Harris and Brady and Faye Harris and Roger and Rita Harris, all of Council, VA; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; Also several nieces and nephews survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, June 2, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Robert Tiller and the Rev. Fred Rife officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris Cemetery on Combs Ridge. The family will receive friends after 6 pm Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeffery Cassell, Gary Hale, Anthony Hale, George Mendoza, Marvin Allen and Cody Shields. Luis Hernandez, Luis Herrera and Jose Chavez will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Cecil A. Duty

LEBANON, VA- Cecil A. Duty, age 87, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Cecil was born November 14, 1928 in the Artrip section of Russell County, a son of the late Starling E. Duty and Dora Smith Duty and the husband of the late Ngaio Lee Hedrick Duty. He was a retired employee of Verizon in Pulaski, VA. for many years. Cecil was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Army Veteran.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three children: Diana, Alvin and Ronald Duty; and several siblings, nieces and nephews.

Survivors include one sister: Kate Duty Cole, Knoxville, TN; and one brother: Jimmy Duty, Cleveland, VA.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Friday, May 27, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Thomas Messick officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. The family will receive friends 1pm until 2 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

David Allen (Crockett) Robins

Cleveland VA- David Allen (Crockett) Robins, age 60, passed at his home Sunday May 22, 2016. Born July 17, 1955 in Lebanon, VA. the son of the late Fred and Viola Mays Robins, David was a 1973 graduate of Lebanon High School, he was employed as a lineman by Powercom in Washington state.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother: Freddie Robins.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years Debbie Lynn Morrison Robins, Two sisters: Catherine Dye and husband Gary, Spring City, and Dorothy Warren and husband Rodney of Abingdon, Two brothers: Neal Mays of Coeburn Va., and Ronald (Freddie) Robins of Lebanon. A special friend his feline Misty. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A special thank you to Mountain States Regional Cancer Center for the kindness shown to David and to Mountain States Hospice.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 am Tuesday May 24, 2016 in the West Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dewey Helbert officiating, those wishing to attend will need to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Monday May 23, 2016 at the funeral home.

Lebanon, VA- Brenda Kaye Morrison, age 70, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 20, 2016 in Bristol Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Brenda was born November 16, 1945 in Lebanon, VA a daughter of the late John Buckles, Jr. and the late Cora Mae Combs Buckles, She attended Trinity Pentecostal Church in Lebanon.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son: Kerry Allen Henley

Survivors include three daughters: Beverly Henley of Abingdon, VA, Katrina Henley of Lebanon, VA, and Jenetta Henley of Dublin, VA, one son: Curtis Henley of Blountville, TN, Two sisters: Pat McReynolds and husband Jerry of Cleveland, and Nancy Jessee of Castlewood, and five grandchildren: Cagney Henley, Bethany Casey, Kayla Deel, Landon Henley, and Miranda Henley. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Betty Jane Hayter Ferguson

LEBANON, Va.-Betty Jane Hayter Ferguson, age 76, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at her home with her family by her side.

Betty was born April 7, 1940 in Washington County the daughter of the late Ed and Ada Branson Hayter. She loved children and had a daycare in her home for many years. She attended Green Valley Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy Hayter and Luther Hayter.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Adron Ferguson; one daughter, Freda Jane Ferguson Musick and husband Michael; one son, Denny Adron Ferguson and wife Wanda, all of Lebanon. Four sisters, Peggy Salyers, Bonnie Woods, Jeanie Kestner all of Abingdon and Patsy Robinson, Bristol, Tn.; three brothers, Carl Hayter, Lebanon, Nelson Hayter, Abingdon and R.C. (Beaver) Hayter and wife Frances, Abingdon; six grandchildren, Chad Ferguson and wife Samantha, Dillon Ferguson, Jordan Musick, Makayla Ferguson, Maranda Ferguson and Justin Musick all of Lebanon; one great-grandchild, Brooklyn Ferguson, Lebanon; sisters-in-law, Gaynell Mitchell, Lebanon, Ema Jean Riley, Troutville, Va., Frances Ferguson, Marion, Va. and one brother-in-law, Buford Ferguson and wife Nancy, Lebanon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in Green Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Naff and Randy Williams officiating. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the service. Entombment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May, 18 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Those wishing to attend should meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chad Ferguson, Dillon Ferguson, Jordan Musick, Justin Musick, Mark Mitchell and Kevin Ferguson. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Musick.

LEBANON, VA-Jimmy B. Akers, age 68, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2016 at his home.

Jimmy was born July 9, 1947 in Lebanon, the son of the late Stewart and Bess Barrett Akers. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company, Clinch River Plant with 37 years of service. He was a member of Mountain View Community Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Charles B. Williams and sister, Marion Lee Nipper.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Angela Vandessa Akers, two sons, Charles Brian Akers and Stewart Evan Akers, mother-in-law, Margie Williams and one sister, Gloria Savage. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 pm., Monday, May 16, 2016 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in Ketron Memorial Gardens. Ollie Mae Osborne

LEBANON, VA- Ollie Mae Osborne, age 98, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 13, 2016 in the Wexford House in Kingsport, Tn. She was born March 22, 1918 in Russell County, VA a daughter of the late William Osborne and Mollie Mays Stapleton. She was the wife of the late Claude Osborne. She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a graduate of Lebanon High School, she was the oldest member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a member of the ladies sewing circle. She was a cancer survivor of 31 years. She was preceded in death by a grandson, James Lee Osborne.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Osborne, Gate City, Va., Ralph Osborne, Lebanon and Donald Osborne and wife Barbara, Lebanon; three grandchildren, Deborah Stanley and husband Carter, Florida, Karen and Daisy Osborne, Kingsport, Tn. and Donald (Slick) Osborne and wife Nancy, Lebanon; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Osborne and fiancée Justin Fields, Lebanon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2016 in Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Cynthia Frye officiating. Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery in Weber City. The family will receive friends 1 until 2 pm prior to the service. Pallbearers Donald (Slick) Osborne, Jr., Raymond Stapleton, Bobby Coats, Andrew Hartsock, Herbie Bevins and Daniel Brommer.
