 James (Jim) R. Gregory

James (Jim) R. Gregory – To some people, his seems a full but ordinary life: attended Honaker High School, served overseas in the Air Force, father to one daughter, long time Locomotive Engineer for Norfolk Southern Railroad, and beloved husband.  But take a closer look and Jim Gregory’s life was not ordinary at all: an avid gardener, loved to travel, fan of NASCAR, Pittsburg Steelers, and country music, shade-tree mechanic and best dance partner in Southwest Virginia (as the members of the Abingdon Senior Center can attest)!  Jim never met a stranger – he loved connecting with people and sharing a laugh.  A dependable, loyal friend, and sought out by those who worked with him, Jim left a permanent mark on the communities where he worked and lived.  He will be dearly missed by all.

Born in Honaker Virginia on July 12, 1933, Jim passed away on April 22, 2015 after a brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Hanson Gregory of Lebanon, VA; a daughter, Rebecca Gregory Elliott, her husband BJ, and a granddaughter Madison, all of Fredericksburg, VA; a brother, Gerald Gregory of Pickerington, OH; a sister, Sarah Love McReynolds of St. Paul, VA; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Gregory of Richlands, VA; a brother-in-law, Bill Boyd of Knoxville, TN; a sister-in law, Carolyn Hanson Fox and husband Bob, of Greer, SC; and beloved nieces and nephews too numerous to mention here.  All were his ‘favorites’.

Preceding Jim in death were his father, John Gregory; his mother, Lenora Combs Gregory; his brother Harold Gregory; his mother-in-law Janie Ketron Hanson; his father-in-law Albert Bragg Hanson; his brother-in-law Mickey McReynolds; and his sister-in-law Jane Ann Hanson Boyd.

The Gregory family will receive friends at Combs Funeral Service, from 6 – 8 pm, Friday, April 24, 2015.  Services will begin at Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 25, 2015. Lunch will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.

    To Elane’s Family:
I want to express my sadness at hearing of Elane’s passing.
I am proud to say that Elane and I were sisters-in-law for many years. I always appreciated her for the way she would “tell it like it is”. You always knew where you stood with Elane, that was so refreshing. Althought it has been several years since I had seen Elane, I still thought the world of her and remember the good times that we shared back then. She was an intelligent, beautiful woman and an extremely proud mother. I am honored to have been her sister-in-law. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, Bret and Jacyln, she will be missed.

Karen Robinson was my BFF for the last 14 yrs, she was such a great friend to everyone that she came into contact with. I miss her so much, she was more than a friend, she was my sister in heart. Love you Karen, but I know that we will see each other again in Heaven. Give my nephew, Dominic Hugh, a hug and kiss and tell him I love him from his Aunt.
