Linda Campbell Harris

LEBANON-Linda Campbell Harris, age 76, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015 in Covenant Place in Sumter, S.C. She was the widow of Jack Monroe Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents Corbett and Clara Campbell. Linda grew up in the Hansonville area. She received her B.S. degree from Longwood College in Farmville, Va. and her Master’s degree from the University of Tennessee. She taught school for 30 years with 28 of those years at Castlewood High School in the business department. She was a member of the DAR, a member of Delta Cappa Gamma, Cedar Grove Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 152. Survivors include three sisters: Rita Jones and husband Ted, Sumter, S.C., Charlene Grabowski and husband Joe, Marlton, N.J. and Peggy Patrick, Sumter, S.C.; one brother: John Thomas Campbell, Marlton, N.J. and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015 in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Terry Johnson and Rev. Chris Musick officiating along with an Eastern Star service conducted by Eastern Star Clinch Valley Chapter 152. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Janith W. Valley

LEBANON, VA- Janith W. Valley, age 79, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2015 in the Russell County Medical Center. Janith was born January 19, 1936 in Richlands, VA a daughter of the late Leon F. Valley and the late Janette Whited Valley. She was a music teacher for Russell County Public Schools. She founded the first band at Honaker High School and the first community orchestra in Russell County. She was a member of Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church. Her passion in life was music. She was the inspiration for many young people and adults for years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Mary Lou and husband Tom Watson and brother Ben Valley and wife Patty. Survivors include one brother L.F. Valley of Lebanon; nephews: David Watson, Bill Watson and wife Kim, Tom Watson and wife Jennifer, Ben Valley, Jr., and Aaron Valley and wife Stacy; nieces: Jenny Valley Sexton and Lisa Stevens and husband Larry. Willie Jewel Cantrell

LEBANON, VA- Willie Jewel Cantrell, age 81, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 24, 2015 in Bristol Regional Medical Center with her family by her side. Jewel was born June 4, 1934 in Russell County a daughter of the late Elihu Jessee and Gladys Ervin Jessee. She was the wife of the late Wiley Cantrell and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one brother: Jim Jessee; and sister: Gaynelle Cantrell. LEBANON, VA- Bernus (Buddy) Ogan Jr., age, 53 passed away Thursday June 18, 2015 in Duke University Hospital. Buddy was born in Russell County the son of the late Bernus (Bud) Ogan Sr. and Ruth Pendergrass Ogan. He was a 1980 graduate of Lebanon High School and was employed by Secor in Lebanon. He was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church. Donita Chaney Lambert

LEBANON-Donita Chaney Lambert, age 58, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.   Donita was born July 2, 1956.  She was a daughter of the late Sonny Chaney and Darlene Henderson. Donita was a 1975 graduate of Lebanon High School and a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.  She was a dedicated Pioneer sports fan.  She was an avid gardener, camper and fisher and cherished her family. Donita was preceded in death by her father: Sonny Chaney; step-father: Thomas Henderson; sister-in-law: Susan Lambert Redman and nephew Aaron Chaney. Survivors include devoted husband of 39 years: Gary Joe Lambert, Lebanon; one daughter: Sara Lambert Osborne and husband Lincoln, Castlewood; two sons: Thad Lambert and wife Misty and Brad Lambert and wife Amy both of Lebanon; mother: Darlene Henderson, Lebanon; one sister: Debbie Lampkin, Lebanon; two brothers: Danny Chaney and wife Regina, Lebanon and Dickie Chaney and wife Linda, Abingdon; six grandchildren: Andy Lambert, Gus and Adelin Osborne, Alexis, Aubrey and Brayden Lambert.   Several nieces and nephews and special friend Nancy Compton also survive. Irene Boardwine Jones

LEBANON, VA- Irene Boardwine Jones, age 88 departed this life to be with the Lord June 19, 2015. Irene was born September 10, 1926 in the Elk Garden Section of Russell County, to Dolphus Benjamin Boardwine and Rosa Hickey Boardwine. She was a lifelong homemaker, dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church for 65 years, where she enjoyed being a choir member, women’s missionary union member and in her earlier years teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was an active member of the Helping Hearts Club. In addition to her Parents she was preceded in death by her sisters: Stella Bralley and Roberta Price; brothers: William Boardwine, Swanson Boardwine and John Boardwine. Survivors include her loving husband of 69 years: Edgar Smith Jones; daughters: Sharon Davis and husband Lester, Lebanon; Barbara Fuller and husband Kemper Fuller, Jr., Lebanon; sons: Edgar A. Harry C. Dickenson

Harry C. Dickenson, age 84, of the Carterton community passed away at Russell County Medical Center on June 16, 2015. He was the son of the late Carlyle Jessee Dickenson and Mentora Bellamy Dickenson. Also deceased of the home was his beloved aunt, Nannie Dickenson. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Fred Gillespie Pruner.   He is survived by his sister, Mary Pruner of Lebanon, Virginia. In addition, he is survived by his nephew, Fred Gillespie Pruner, Jr., of Magnolia, Texas, and his niece, Betty Pruner Ray, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Also surviving are his great nieces: Holly Annette Pruner, Rachael Mentora Ray, and Marian Hope Ray.   Helping Harry manage the farm was his dear friend Wayne Duncan assisted by his son, Matthew. Wayne has been with Harry 43 years—since the age of 13. His other dear friend was Betty Robinson, who has been his housekeeper every week for 27 years.   Harry graduated from Castlewood High School in 1952. He attended Emory and Henry College.   A life-long resident of Russell County, Harry Dickenson was a well-regarded farmer, friend, and neighbor. He usually had a story to tell and a kind ear for listening to what others had to say. A smile was his ready companion. He was fond of local history, facts, and details of people and places in Russell County.   He was known as a local expert in genealogy and received requests as a consultant from local residents as well as those from across the country.   He was a faithful member of Springfield Baptist Church all of his life.   He lived his Christianity in how he treated others both fairly and honestly.   Thanks to Maple Grove at Lebanon and Russell County Medical Center for the wonderful care he was given during his sickness. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2015, in Springfield Baptist Church near his home with Dr. Heath Kahlbau and Rev. Dennis Scarberry officiating. Burial and committal service will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, with the Rev. Thomas Messick officiating. Robert Miles Goodman

Gray, TN- Robert Miles Goodman of Gray Tennessee passed away at the age of 73, on June 5, 2015, the date that God determined his work on earth was done and he took him home. Robert was born and raised in the mountains of Marlinton, West Virginia. As an adolescent he was a loner who loved to hunt and fish and at the age of 17 he joined the United States Air Force. Robert proudly served 26 years in the Air force and is a Vietnam Veteran. Robert retired as a Master Sergeant from Bolling AFB, Washington, DC where he was the First Sergeant of the 1776th Supply Squadron. His proudest family moment was raising four wonderful children whom he loves dearly. Robert was also a diehard fan of the Green Bay Packers. He was preceded in death by his parents: Raus L. Goodman Sr. and Vivian C. Eddy; one brother: Raus; two sisters: Tootsie and Betty. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Ann Goodman of 50 years. Children and their spouses: Teresa and William Barnes, Rebecca Goodman, Vivian and Shawn Malinowski and Raus L. LEBANON, VA- Dallard Ernest Yates, age 96, passed away at his home Monday, June 1, 2015. Ernest was born October 5, 1918 in Russell County, he was the son of the late James Franklin Yates and the late Mary Mollie Buckles Yates and the husband of the late Thelma Sue Shepard Yates. He was a lifelong farmer and resident of Russell County. He attended Miller View Primitive Baptist Church. He loved horses and instilled this love in his family. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two sons: Dallard Faye Yates and James Earl Yates; grandson: Justin Dallard Yates; seven brothers and sisters: Virgil Jackson, Con Yates, Clarence Yates, Lola Fields, Mary Sue Hughes, James Franklin Yates, Jr., and Bruce Yates. June Madeline Hankins Linkous

BELFAST, VA-June Madeline Hankins Linkous, 83, passed away on May 31, 2015, at the home of her daughter, Catherine, in Elizabethton, Tenn. She was born on October 28, 1931. She was the daughter of Davis S. Hankins and Lillie Settle Hankins, deceased. June had lived in the Belfast area her entire life. June Hankins Linkous will be remembered by many from her days as an employee of the First National Bank located on Main Street in Lebanon, Virginia. During her 39 year banking career, the name of the bank changed many times, but the location stayed the same. Prior to her retirement, she was serving as Vice President of the Dominion Bank. On Sundays one could always find June Linkous at the Belfast United Methodist Church where during her 39 years of membership, she served 32 years as Treasurer. She also served on the Administrative Council. Her dedication to church and God, and her exemplary Christian way of living was acknowledged by her church during a special ceremony. During the October 2009 Home Coming, a special time was given to honor June Linkous for those qualities. The following best describes the June Linkous who will be remembered by many: “For your lifetime contributions to the Belfast United Methodist Church, and in recognition of your Christian faith, faithfulness to the Kingdom of God, and all God’s Children…We present this award to June Linkous.” In her later years, June Linkous believed that her service to God should be that of visiting the sick, or just checking on relatives and other folks in the area in which she lived. Her phone calls and her visits will be missed but she will be long remembered for her commitment to her mission of serving God. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Jackson Linkous; two infant brothers, James Garfield and Joe Edd; brother-in-law, Roy Ellis Sword; nephew, Lynn Ellis Sword and several aunts and uncles. LEBANON-Kathleen Brooks Dye, 96, passed away at The Wexford House in Kingsport, Tenn. on Friday, May 29 2015. Born January 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William Hensley and Orpha Katherine Jessee Brooks and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was of the Christian faith and was a retired seamstress, having worked at Russell Manufacturing Company and Lebanon Apparel Corporation. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, William (Bill) Dye and Harry (Ronnie Dye); granddaughter, Karen Dye Sobczak; former husband, Bailey Howard Dye; sisters, Lula Cumbow, Maude Ferguson, Effie Owens and Audrea Dishman Pennington; brothers, Hobert Brooks, Clayton Brooks, infant Bascom Brooks and Vaughn Brooks; half sisters, Malva Cook, Altha Davis, Emily Sutherland and Rose Jessee and half brothers, Emory and Duard Brooks. She is survived by her daughters, Judy (Dennis) Raupp, Bristol, Tenn. and Kathy (Michael) Greene, Mt. Carmel, Tenn..; sons, Bud (Mary) Dye, Williamsburg, Va. and Larry (Lee Ann) Dye, Garden City, Mich.; daughters-in-law, Nancy Dye and Louise Dye, both of Lebanon, Va.; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.     I am so sorry for your loss. As a mother I know exactly the hurt and pain you are feeling for I loss my son back in 2001. And if it wasn’t for the Lord’s help I would have never made it through this terrible ordeal. I pray that you lean on Jesus in this time of sorrow and let him help you through this. God is our refuge in our time of need. I pray God gives you all the strength that you need.Lord I ask you to help this family in their time of sorrow in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

    To Elane’s Family:
    I want to express my sadness at hearing of Elane’s passing.
    I am proud to say that Elane and I were sisters-in-law for many years. I always appreciated her for the way she would “tell it like it is”. You always knew where you stood with Elane, that was so refreshing. Althought it has been several years since I had seen Elane, I still thought the world of her and remember the good times that we shared back then. She was an intelligent, beautiful woman and an extremely proud mother. I am honored to have been her sister-in-law. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, Bret and Jacyln, she will be missed.

    Karen Robinson was my BFF for the last 14 yrs, she was such a great friend to everyone that she came into contact with. I miss her so much, she was more than a friend, she was my sister in heart. Love you Karen, but I know that we will see each other again in Heaven. Give my nephew, Dominic Hugh, a hug and kiss and tell him I love him from his Aunt.
